Pete libertines hit on the head...

Hey I just seen this article over on www.thisisfakediy.com all about Pete from the LIbertine's problems, i think it pretty much nails it. You should get over there and see what you think, theyve got some pretty good forums too.
The articles on the front page, not hard to find.

The Libertines

are there any libertines fans here? for those who do no know them, they are a brit punk/pop group that is really big in the UK. you can definitely sense that they listened to lots of sex pistols growing up.

Han 11-20-2004 05:49 AM

Yeah they are ok...

Sneer 02-07-2005 02:40 PM

The Libertines

their not indie, their not "alt" their not pop so i guess i should put this thread here. anyway, a lot of people seem to dislike the libertines, dismissing pete doherty as talentless. granted, he is a prized fool, but i like the libertines music and im wondering whos with me?

Sweet Jane 02-07-2005 02:51 PM

I'm with you, I loved Up the Bracket (it just made me happy every time I listened to it) and like the second album, in a different way, but not quite as much. I won't dismiss the band just cause the ex-member's a twat, but I'm not sure if they'll pull it off without him - I seen them twice live back in their hayday and it was an a really good show, Pete and Carl had something that was sorely lacking when I seen them on the following two occasions minus pete. Another reason people tend to like them is accusing them of ripping off the Clash or the Jam, which I don't think they did either. Very much influenced by, but not ripped off so I won't hold that against them either. I think it might be the end of an era for the Libertines now. They were part of a period of my life, a period fuelled by random secret gigs in abandoned flats and mental nights out, and it was fun while it lasted.

franscar 02-07-2005 02:52 PM

My major problem with them was that I read and heard loads of people saying that they were incredible and timeless and the most important band during my lifetime, and that was before I heard them. I must admit I was seriously underwhelmed. Maybe I just don't get some hidden spiritual meaning or I can't see what it is I'm supposed to be identifying with, but none of their records have actually made me put them above about eighty or so other bands that I could listen to if they were on the radio, but would never dream of paying to see, or buying an album from.

I don't think Pete Doherty is completely talentless, but I wouldn't say he was altogether talented either.

Sneer 02-07-2005 02:58 PM

incredible no, timeless no, but they were good fun and their music was a real blast of energy and joy. pete came up with some really apt and great lyrics i thought. Up the Bracket is one of my favourite albums of the last 5 years, and dont look back into the sun is definetly up there with my favourite contempory songs, they had the chemistry. shame they only made 2 albums. still, we have babyshambles :banghead:

hookers with machineguns 02-07-2005 05:00 PM

Well Pete was the one that ultimately led to the demise of the libertines. f*ck him. I always liked carl better anyway.
But yeah the Libertines were fun to listen to and fun to hear about. It seemed like America loved them more than the UK.
I think all the members have gone their own ways now, I just literally read an article the other day saying Carl is working on a solo album, so look out for that libertinos.

Sneer 02-08-2005 02:25 PM

i didnt think they were that big in the U.S

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-08-2005 02:38 PM

Their first couple of singles were alright , but they just got old really quickly.

There`s hundreds of bands around that sound like that. It didn`t help that they`ve been hyped to death by certain music publications making them out to be far more than what they are.

thats a fair point, they were made out to be incredible and saviours of british rock, up the bracket, dont look back into the sun, horrorshow, boys in the band, cant stand me now and the likely lads are all great singles though in my opinion.

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-08-2005 03:10 PM

I remember a couple of years back the NME devoted 2 WHOLE news pages on one of Pete Doherty`s houseparties getting stopped by police.

The basic story was he had a party at his house & neighbours called the police where they were told to turn their stereo down.

2 whole pages for THAT.

That`s the kind of stuff that could put me off a band no matter how good they are

Sneer 02-08-2005 03:22 PM

i dont understand why people hate bands because they get media coverage. ok fair enough, 2 pages broadcasting a house party is a bit pointless and a waste of 10 minutes of readers lives but on the whole, commercialisation just means a band is popular and successful.

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-08-2005 03:31 PM

This was just after their first single came out

or of course that theyve just been created like 'steps' specifically for commercialisation. C'est-a-dire que Steps were NAY successful, they just licked the arse out of every promotor that came withing 10 miles of them!

Sneer 02-12-2005 02:42 PM

thats not what i meant, i'll be more specific, i dont see how a band that earns success through their albums and become more commercial means theyve "sold out"

xX-Avenged7X-Xx 04-18-2005 05:09 PM

I'm also a guy and like the libertines. I wouldn't label them as a girl band at all.

Supersonic 04-18-2005 05:21 PM

Your friends talk bollocks

What a waster, what a ****in waster :band:

ThePinkNightmare 04-19-2005 09:01 AM

Im not a fan of The Libertines and im a girl so your friends are talking out their arse! I dont think they're a girl's band at all!

TheBig3 04-19-2005 09:10 AM

Yeah what's their basis for labeling it a girls band? I didn't know they had "tie me off barbie" on the market.

I have their first CD. It didn't get too many spins but their are a decent, androgynous (sp?), band.

ThePinkNightmare 04-19-2005 09:16 AM

I bought their first album but i didnt like it all that much so i returned it and swapped it for Muse - Hullabaloo! but they are/were very popular.
...i think that is how you spell androgynous lol

Sneer 04-19-2005 09:21 AM

i prefer ub the braxket to the self titled.

ArtistInTheAmbulance 04-20-2005 12:19 PM

Ok, this thread is about the libertines. Lets leave promotion to the Promotion forums, and arguments to PMs...

Sneer 04-20-2005 12:19 PM

did any of us say we're in bands? please go away.

my band doesnt play death, but i dont need to explain the type of music we play. We play gigs, gone on several tours (hell ive been playing for 13 years now), but even that isnt what i was getting at. Im glad you guys play good music, whatever kind it is, if its good to you then keep playing. But the "im in a band, so i know what good music is" is total BS, and i had to call you on it. Thats like saying any other musician knows good music because theyre musicians, its just nonsense.
