U2 is for people whose lives are so interesting that they can't handle it when their music makes them pick up their heads. That's what draws them to artists like U2 and Phil Collins: everyone needs a little mind numbing boredom in their lives, and they do the trick.

Greatest for me would probably be Simon and Garfunkel.

I guess TVU would be an early predecessor to alternative. If yo think about it, a lot of early alternativer bands had distorted guitars. Pixies, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr....
