I tend to forget Nina Simone stepped outside of Blues into gospel and was also a wonderful pianist. This track was the first song to jolt me out of my ‘only classical music matters’ ignorance.

The GOAT of jazz pianists is without question Thelonious Monk.

Absolutely! Love him. Barry once stated Monk was his biggest influence as a jazz pianist. Harris was another great in his own right.

Yes, absolutely genius. I love watching his masterclasses. I thought it was so funny when he talked about how overrated he thought Bill Evans was.

Some of my favorites:

Oscar Peterson -- my all time favorite

Roland Hanna

Toshiko Akiyoshi -- He work with her husband Lew Tabackin and their big band was fine but her solo piano work is great

Marian McPartland -- She was so much more than the host of the great Piano Jazz program. Her work over decades of a very long life showed her aptitude for many styles, from older traditional jazz to free jazz.
