I can't STAND this guy (both his personality and his music) but definitely soft rock.

I think John Mayer is really Justin Bieber's older brother. I'm so weary of the smarmy pretty boy pop idols. Pack 'em all off to concentration camps, feed them Ramen noodles and make them bust up rocks in the hot sun to earn their keep.

ok so after all the hoopla,, is he blues or is he not,, IMHO NOT! just because a guitarist can produce some blues chops doesn't make him/her a blues guitarist. A blues guitarist is Albert Collins, the three Kings, SRV, Peter Green, Tinsley Ellis, Buddy Guy, Michael Burks, just to name a few.
John Mayer is NO blues guitarist, he may have a few good chops and his idol may be SRV and he might can play some of Stevies licks but until he stands up and makes it known to the world THRU HIS MUSIC regardless of his personal lifestyle he ain't no blues man.

I listen to blues a lot. Never really listened to John Mayer....so I did. Why would his name even come up in a blues forum?

John Mayer could have been great. But just because you own an SRV Strat doesn't mean you're a blues guitarist. He had the potential, but chose the money and bitches instead.

Or maybe he's smarter than all of us.

I don't think he's jazz or even blues really, you might say he's pop but difinitely not blues.
