on the first music forum i posted on in like 2003 two of the prolific posters had a flirty banter that was playful and public and seemed all in good fun. but the guy got like REALLY about it and i can't blame him bc the girl was a babe she would always drunk post and then share pictures of her making bacon in a thong - i think her username was like Vodka69 or something like that i'm not even kidding. anyway dude ended up mailing her a ring and was like, i'm ready for this, i'm all in on this relationship, i just quit my job, and i have a plane ticket to your city, pick me up Sunday at 11am (or whatever) let's start our life together. he posted a selfie of himself in the airport about to board and while he was on the plane she posted a like "wtf is this a joke" and then both went silent for MONTHS. turns out she never picked him up (obviously!!!!) and he came home all broken hearted and it really ruined the forum because from then on it was him being all mopey and he was a mod so he'd get butthurt and be petty about banning people etc. and then one time like a year later she came back and posted a picture with her new bf and was like what's up how's everyone and dude MELTED down and a bunch of the girl posters were like "how DARe YOU come back here" "YOU BROKE HIS HEAAAART" etc etc.
