Cranberry juice and other juices are no problem with my vodka, they don't go through the same process as fermenting.

Tried out AU LAC the other day on a veggie kick. Food was awesome, they do the raw veggie thing very well. Also Native Foods on the list is outstanding.

or are we just anthropomorphising them based on observation?

So it's intelligence that decides whether or not something can be eaten? Can we eat the retarded? What about the catatonic? What about babies? What about people in a vegetative state? None of them are really on the same intellectual level as a "normal" human.

I must ask you to define what exactly it is about human "sapiency" that makes them exempt from the same lack of consideration that we give animals. At this point I'm sort of guessing what your standards are. I'm coming to the conclusion that you don't really have a clear, definite idea yourself.

I can tell. Which is why I'm trying to get you thinking outside society's accepted beliefs on the subject. I'm not entirely sure of my own beliefs on life and all that muckety muck. It's hard, but if there's a reason why life should be preserved, that reason should be clearly defined as much as possible, instead of relying on outdated and useless concepts like souls and being a "superior" species.

i already said i don't think there's any religious, moral or scientific justification for eating meat

it's just me trying to justify my own complacency and/or just intellectual wanking, you choose

Although we can't know for sure, it seems reasonable that other mammals like pigs who we are relatively closely related to are similar to us when it comes to emotions and so on. Feelings motivate us into action and I'm pretty sure those roughly same feelings are what motivates pigs, dogs, cows and other social mammals.

I like morale theory a lot, but since I first read any of it, it struck me that people don't follow them. Just about none of us follow any normative ethic or moral principles like utilitarism to the letter. The reason, I believe, is that we are not rational beings and our morale is hard coded into us and it's not very well described by current morale theories. Even though we'd like to follow any theory, most of us end up following our gut feelings and so these morale theories are mostly for guidance when moral situations become extreme, such as matters of life and death, or for providing arguments in moral discussions.

Relating it to this thread, you can tell someone why it might be wrong to eat meat from a point of view, but if that person doesn't feel wrong when eating it, he or she is not gonna change. And, if he or she does feel bad when eating meat, then it's not because of what the morale theory says.
