I don't think eating meat and fat can fully explain the obesity we see in parts of the western world. Both vegetarianism and obesity is (relatively) rare here in Norway. I don't have any norwegian vegetarian friends (only from other countries) and while I live in Oslo at the moment, on a regular day, I don't see any obese people.
