These hipsters sound like the equivalent but a lot worse, although I have to admit a "hipster" band Wavves I find pretty damn enjoyable. They're only disliked because they have twats for fans. I hope I meet a hipster. Got any pictures of what you consider to be a typical hipster? I'd like to know what to look for. |

Look at This F*cking Hipster is a good place to start. Yup, there's a blog dedicated to it.
Other than that, I'd say look for non-prescription chunky black eyewear, thrift-store sweaters, and Pabst Blue Ribbon beer.

I don't even acknowledge the existence of stylistic sects any more. I don't know if it's the product of growing up or just ceasing to give a fuck, but I really think that all the so called Hipsters, Emos, Goths, etc. are really just the same fucking thing looking a little different from each other and listening to music that sounds different, and hating everyone who doesn't belong in their sheep pin.
When I was a teen, I did the same crap--albeit for different styles/music culture identification--so I can relate and I don't really blame people for it.... But from my perspective, these stylistically-minded people who listen to only what their style permits and their friends accept... they look and are acting fucking retarded. I wish I had the brain I have, back when I was doing that stupid shit. I probably would have learned a lot more about music and culture than I did up until this point. Now days, I hear about "Hipsters" and all these other trends, and I just see a bunch of people who are temporarily populating a passing phenomenon and nothing more. I couldn't give a fuck less. I don't hang out with them. They have no impact on my opinions or anything else involved in my life that I have actual control over. Popular/influential style may as well be located in another fucking dimension for all I care. |

I think I stopped caring about stylistic sects when I realised they were based on the more general concept that people constantly strive towards an ideal of themselves in life (basically a projection of who/what they could potentially be). And since teenagers are quite impressionable, cliquey and relatively free from commitments, their ideals tend to take on more aesthetic values influenced by other people. Stylistic sects are the teenage form of ideals.
I've come to think that the extent to which a person strives towards these ideals is more telling about the person than the ideals themselves; i.e. superficially, a bling adorned rap fanatic turning into a leather and spikes metalhead is a drastic change/evolution. However, underneath, the zebra stripes probably are still the same - different ideals, same attitude/commitment towards the ideals. Ask most people what they think of their past selves and there's a good chance they'll be critical with a response like "I was an idiot back then"... and quite often the reason is that their ideals have changed drastically since then. Less often, the reason is that they realise they've been pigeonholing themselves by even attaching themselves so diligently to these ideals in the first place. Sorry if I'm babbling... I've been awake for far too long

I never really fit into any group. They all kind of bothered me. It was like they weren't really them anymore they were just doing whatever they could to fit in their niche. Sad cases

Out of the bands you listed, I probably like Arctic Monkeys the best though
I dislike hipsters/indie music elitists in general, how they think they're something special just because they listen to 'unaccessible' music, and think 'independently'. And their stupid nerd glasses. I like air quotes ![]()

I love 'Indie' music for what it is these days, a genre. People that shun bands because of how big they are do my fucking head in. I prefer bands that are accessible, bands that don't have a Wiki page are a pain in the fucking arse.
I don't get how Indiefags or "hispters" actually enjoy listening to music that's harder to get hold of. A Wiki page makes life so much easier. Indiefags are the British version of hipsters I think, Indiefags aren't as annoying as Hipsters. Hipsters seem to listen to a lot of obscure noise pop and surfer stuff. Indiefags just listen to really bland Indie bands that sound like The Kooks without the radio airplay or record deal. I actually like a bit of Hipster type music, like Wavves for example. But because of their fan base, and how hyped they are they are hated for it. I think these hipster folk do listen to some good music, but because they take pride in how obscure it is, they won't get credit for it. Because they're arseholes. |

I have one or two indie*** friends. I swear they avoid the charts like the plague. I genuinely don't understand how they can live their life like that (bit dramatic maybe, probably not) but I love the fact that you could shuffle my iTunes and could hear Sugababes, Mogwai, Godspeed! The Strokes and Kelly Clarkson.
I think it's just insane when people restrict themselves with music, especially in case their status is damaged by listening to some bands with actual commercial recognition. So I guess you could say that I dislike people trying too hard to conform to a certain scene, it's more effort than it's even worth. Get over yourself. |
