I didn't think there was anything worse than the hamburger phone, but I was wrong.

Put it on a Grand Piano and adorn it with Rhinestones.

heyo anyone wanna help me out here. Im thinking about finally getting a laptop or tablet but dont know much about either (or the difference between the two in the context of what id want it for). Mostly i would be using it for work related stuff, predominantly excel and word. I am leaning toward the Microsoft tablet, but dont know enough about it even with the reviews ive read. As far as i can tell, if i get the keyboard extension it should work fine for what im using it for, plus its way less expensive than a laptop.

anyone have the microsoft tablet or know if its total shhit or whatever? Or if something like the macbook would be better?

Not sure why someone would pay all that extra money to buy a mac for spreadsheets and documents. Really, you're ok with just buying the cheapest thing you can find, so long as it's a decently reputable brand.

Lenovo is coming up in the world. Maybe you can search around on their lowest end laptop models. If you need a tablet, then just go with the lowest price you can find. Spreadsheets and documents are seriously not the kind of thing you need to plan for in terms of computing power. Really, you just need to look at cost and longevity. And now days, that's pretty much built in.

Thanks and yeah what you say makes sense. I guess my main concern is that a tablet would be much more difficult to do basic functions on. Ive heard on some tablets that excel is awkward to use, pdfs dont work, and simple things like copy and paste are painful. I think having a keyboard extension should lessen most of these issues (and i PDFs should work on microsoft tablets?) but I just wanted a better idea of what the compromises would be by going with a tablet. I would rather not pay up the arse but I also dont want something that I cant efficiently work on.

And I have checked Lenovo and I just dont know the difference between their tablets and the ones straight off the microsoft site haha. I had no idea there were so many options. Im leaning towards the Microsoft Surface 2 if that means anything.

I had been thinking of going for a tablet but when I said it would be mostly for writing most if not all replies advised against it. Tablets are more for your media stuff --- watching tv, reading books, maybe some games --- apparently but not for any serious "office work". I'd go for a laptop or maybe a netbook? Asus ones are supposed to be good, of course Sony VAIO is the best if you can afford it, but as FD says Lenovo are making their mark. I wouldn't go for a Dell or anything though. Make sure it has some decent memory (4 gb or more) as otherwise you'll be waiting forever for it to boot up. Also unless you like Win 8 I'd try to get one with Win 7 installed.

Some solid advice there TH. Almost exactly what I 'd say. Asus is pretty solid for the money. I bought my daughter one a few years back, and it's still a workhorse for her since she's carried it over from HS to college (2nd year). However, I'd stay away from the netbooks. I deal with them everyday for our wireless RTD systems, and had bought one for my GF quite a while ago. The limited amount of RAM, as well as having the Windows "Starter" edition will have you pulling hair out in no time.

I'd go with a low end Lenovo, or Asus Laptop for someone just requiring spreadsheet/word processing.

Is there an easy or not massive pain in the ass way to transfer a couple thousand emails from one email client to the other? Specifically from Apple Mail to Microsoft Outlook. I've got a couple thousand emails I'd like to have on my desktop.
