I bring it up because it's an argument I had today. I haven't had many male friends, but I'm confident that those I've had have had no interest in me. That's been my experience and what I'd like to believe.

I've been friends with this girl for almost 20 years.
We'd go out together, we'd get drunk together, I'd go around her house every so often, we've even been on holiday together a few times visiting mutual friends.
There's never been any hint of any sexual attraction by either of us.

Mind you, I've lost count of the number of her female friends I've hit on, and the same could be said of her about my male friends.

Having a friend of the opposite sex does have it's benefits, even if you're not attracted to that person yourself.
