Sir George Martin, the 'fifth Beatle' dies, aged 90 - BBC News

Obviously I didn't know George Martin, but I was always impressed by his interviews; he came across as a sensible and modest man; talented but unpretentious. In the music business, that must have been pretty refreshing!!

According to Paul McCartney:-

"He was a true gentleman and like a second father to me. He guided the career of The Beatles with such skill and good humour that he became a true friend to me and my family. If anyone earned the title of the fifth Beatle it was George. From the day that he gave The Beatles our first recording contract, to the last time I saw him, he was the most generous, intelligent and musical person I've ever had the pleasure to know."

Y'know I'd been thinking somewhat often the past year or so about George, knowing he was getting pretty old. In fact I just wondered about him a few days ago. Looks like his time finally came. RIP George Martin.

Well, we kinda knew this was coming, he's been in poor heath for a while, but it still hurts.

Literally, I got home from work and clicked on my bookmark for Pitchfork and said to myself, "I wonder who has died today?" First thing I saw was the headline on the front page about Keith Emerson. Answered my question!

Didn't know he'd been in poor health. Sad story.

So he had nerve damage and was losing feeling in hands making it so he couldn't play keyboards any more...

Was there anything else?

I'm not saying that wouldn't be crushing but it doesn't seem like enough to make life seem completely not worth living. He could still enjoy literature and listening to music and live somewhere beautiful in a nice home with great views.

That's really sad. A loss and at least from what I know also a waste.

If I lost the ability to play music it'd be pretty hard to cope with, even with all of the other ways that I can occupy my time. I imagine I'd still find a way though.
