Default Addiction

Have you ever been addicted? If so, what were you addicted to?

I myself have struggled with a reliance on alcohol since I was very young. I still drink heavily on occasion but mostly in social situations. I now tend to avoid drinking alone or having drinks every day. I'm not like most people who've struggled with this in that I can still be around alcohol and drink and be okay. This is likely due to the age limit in my country for purchasing alcoholic beverages is 21, and I am only 18. So unless I'm rooming with someone or living with my parents who are moderate drinkers, I'm not around it as much as others.

I'm an alcoholic.
The only way I can be interested in anything is by experiencing it under the influence of alcohol.

You're not an alcoholic unless you get that low.

Have you ever been to AA? I found it pretty ironic that listening to people whine made me want to drink.

Nah, never been to AA.
I'm a functioning alcoholic. The only problems I'm causing are strictly the concerns of my liver.

I never needed it either, I only went a few times for other people's sake.

Yeah, I have obsessive compulsions. My house is usually neat and tidy (largely because of my presence), and I can never be comfortable in rooms that are even mildly cluttered. Lots of these compulsions extend beyond just order and neatness though, many are bodily, and those are the most troublesome. I often succomb to compulsions such as oral picking, excessive blinking, and (for lack of a better term) symmetrical touching.

The farthest back I can remember having obsessive compulsions is probably when I was around 5 or 6. I would always whisper to myself what I had just said aloud after I spoke to make sure that it sounded right, and I still do that to this day.

I actually used to do that, too. I don't have any obsessive compulsive tendencies myself, but almost my entire family does. My brother especially suffers from severe compulsions.

I have a gaming and computer addiction. I don't like to joke about it and I'm certainly not proud of it, because I hate myself for it. I think that gaming's been responsible for 90% of the problems I currently have, and I'm sick of it. I've tried telling myself to stop more than once, but every time I start wanting to just finish one game or find out there's a new sequel for a series I love or something, and go back to it. My parents make every effort they can to keep me from wasting my entire life on it, and without them I'm sure I would, but I still waste hours and hours each day on it. And the thing I hate the most? I don't admit it. Whenever people ask about gaming or what I play, I'll normally try and change the subject or lie and say I don't play it much. I think I've given the impression with my friends that I'm a casual gamer rather than an obsessive one. Hell, I used to even appear offline on Xbox Live just to make sure nobody would cop on to me. One thing I've silently sworn to myself is that when I leave home, there will be no more. I don't care if I have to detatch myself from every electronic device in life to get away from it. Gaming's ruined my childhood and I won't let it go any further.

I'm addicted to cigarettes. I've made a few attempts in the past couple of years to give them up, or even just go back to social smoking, but failed miserably. I've never bothered trying any of the nicotine patches or anything else because they probably won't make a difference, but some day I'm aiming to give them up cold turkey. Now after typing this I'd love a cigarette.
