What prerequisites did that job have? Sounds like something you cant just step into.

My only qualification was knowing somebody

But it's mostly office work, inputting data from fishing expeditions into computers and calculating the average weight and length of a particular species of fish. Pretty basic math, no need for any schooling or anything. I like it though, I'm usually in the office all by my lonesome so I'll put a few albums on while I work.

I'm in school, I work at a grocery store as a cashier and bagger/unwanted job doer, and also at my family's garden center bottling dangerous chemicals and/or plant nutrients, bagging up dirt and such, and stocking shelves. I get to listen to my music while I work the second job, so it's a sweet gig. I just can't listen to anything too out there or I'll get complaints from the coworkers that have to enter my domain.
