Your favourite smell(s)?

Weird question perhaps, but it struck me as I was going into Tescos that one of the most pleasant and welcoming smells for me is fresh bread baking. There's just something so homely and warm about it, and it always puts me in a good mood.

Then there's aviation fuel. That goes back to when I was a kid, and as a treat (cos we lived near it) we would often get taken to the airport to watch the planes. And this was back when you could actually stand outside and breathe the fumes in, before all this security stuff later meant you had to watch through thick glass windows! Then when I became a planespotter in the 80s, that smell was part of my life for about five years.

And finally, coffee. I hate coffee, but even I have to admit the smell of freshly roasting coffee is a lovely welcoming smell.

So, anyone?

Sansa Stark 05-20-2013 05:47 PM

My own farts.

FRED HALE SR. 05-20-2013 05:50 PM

Flowers. I'm an amateur botanist in my free time. They die half the time but its fun.

Stephen 05-20-2013 05:52 PM

Rainforest. I love the kind of damp earth smell you get walking through rainforest.

I'm pretty conscious of smells generally. My wife thought I was crazy when I said I could smell ants once but they're actually pretty pungent. Not a fan of many perfumes either. I feel like I'm sniffing petrol or something. I like sandalwood. I like when the jasmine is flowering in the back yard.

Cuthbert 05-20-2013 05:56 PM

Aside from the obvious classics like cut grass and petrol:

- The air after it's rained in spring/summer and you can smell the trees and plants
- The air when it's roasting hot and people are having barbecues
- A girl's hair when you're cuddling them
- Beer in pub beer gardens in hot weather
- This cream stuff Soap and Glory Smoothie Star and 8482 Body Lotion 500ml - Boots , bought some for my sister then ended up buying some for myself
- Opening a CD and giving the booklet a sniff
- Concourses in football stadiums and you can smell the balti pies cooking

Too many perfumes to mention as well.

djchameleon 05-20-2013 06:01 PM

I love the smell of booklets and discs when you open a new package. Whether it be video games, dvds, blu-rays anything.

Anything that has a ting of a citrus scent to it does it for me.

I've always hated to smell of rain though especially on a hot day. I think it's most likely in combination with the asphalt but yuck so gross.'

Coffee and Cigs combined need to stay away from my nostrils. :nono:

The office I work in over the summer (and hopefully into the fall!) is situated on airport property here, fairly close to the runways, so jet fuel is a regular odour outside, especially in the morning and in the early evening when the jets are being refuelled. I got used to it.

But my parents' house is right in the flightpath of jets that go to the airport, so the SOUND of airplanes will always remind me of home. One flies over about every 3 minutes.

No wonder why you've never sent me any flowers

My favourite smell is that smell in the air right after it rains. Wet asphalt, wet soil... it's so refreshing to me.

14232949 05-20-2013 06:04 PM

you see when you've not washed in a day, or two...and that sweet musky smell of your balls. that's a good smell.

Cuthbert 05-20-2013 06:11 PM

Forgot this one as well, tinned dog food. Smells lovely, I used to want to eat it as a child. Never did though.

CrazyVegn 05-20-2013 06:33 PM

Peppermint, pine, grape perfume, grape candy, vacuumed carpet, wet and wooden flatwash brush, plumeria, smoking birthday candles, vanilla frosting, brand new book, salty (slightly pork smelling) cat skin, cedar, rain, fresh newsprint ink, wood burning stoves, bubble gum, chocolate, Neosporin, carved pumpkin, burnt pumpkin, Coca Cola, wet stamps or envelope seals, vanilla extract, almond extract, bar soap on human skin, fried red potatoes, the bread aisle, colored dye on thread, etc...

Salty cat skin? Did I just read that right?

I like the smell of my neighbour's cat. She smells of strawberries.

Sansa Stark 05-20-2013 06:53 PM

My cat's feet smell like corn chips or he smells like There's Something about Sofia

I have to admit that I sort of like the smell of horse shit. And I don't mean the metaphorical kind.

Yeah horse/cow poo is quite nice.

Since we're going in that sort of direction (Manky started it), I like the smell of my own j1zz. Smells aquatic and clean.

Forward To Death 05-20-2013 07:06 PM

Beer.

Scarlett O'Hara 05-20-2013 07:08 PM

My favourite smells are vived pens, my pink happiness perfume, cats in general, coffee, men's perfume, pizza and hot cookies.

Trollheart 05-20-2013 07:10 PM

I forgot another one: the smell of old books, like books in the library or old schoolbooks. I was an early reader (who woulda guessed, huh?) and joined my local library at 8 years. Like a fool I contemptuously passed the children's section and went straight for the adult, where I borrowed Kipling's "The jungle book". Man, was I annoyed when there wasn't one dancing bear nor singing ape in it!

But that smell always reminds me of the early, early days, discovering all those amazing books: you know, the big, hardbacked ones about geography, history, famous people and places, pottery ... anything really. Then I discovered the yellow-jacketed Gollanctz science-fiction novel series, and the path of my life was forever set...

I like smelling men's perfumes/colognes. I think they're full of pheromones, that might be why, haha. And I like the way men smell when they give you a full body hug!

I like that smell too, though sometimes I find it kind of overpowering.

On the subject of childhood memory smells: I love the smell of freshly cut wood. My dad ran a small construction company out of our house when I was growing up and I spent a lot of time on job sites with him as a result. Now that smell just brings back happy memories. There's a house being constructed on the corner of my block right now and I've really been enjoying the smell every time I walk by.

That just reminds me of itchy throats thanks to my dust allergy.

FETCHER. 05-21-2013 01:54 AM

I love the smell of cut grass, petrol, after it rains on a really warm day, moss, the earthy smell of the forests, I like the smell of chlorine, inside oldish books, the smell of weed, men's aftershave, the smell off an engine after you've just beat the **** out of it on some backroad, burning rubber, the smell of puppies, cinnamon, the cooking of almost anything.

Scarlett O'Hara 05-21-2013 02:23 AM

I forgot popcorn, I love the smell of popcorn.

Stephen 05-21-2013 03:17 AM

I find cinema popcorn booths smell strangely like cat spray.

Scarlett O'Hara 05-21-2013 03:25 AM

I like the cook yourself popcorn, makes the kitchen smell like it for days.

Burn them and it's a completely different story.

Janszoon 05-21-2013 04:35 AM

I love the way rain in the desert smells. It's always reminded me of butterscotch.

Dayvan Cowboy 05-21-2013 04:55 AM

I like the smell of my clothes after I go into a forest, and I like the smell of clean wool!
I'm allergic to perfumes so all of my god smell- experiences are restricted to natural phenomena.

anticipation 05-21-2013 05:50 AM

Pizza, marijuana, tires, diesel fuel, beer, the way an ice rink smells, hockey gloves, rosemary.
