No, walking around malls has always done this to me, even when I was was a teenager. Museums have the same effect too. I think it has to do with the standing and looking at stuff part of the equation

At least you get to sit down at a strip club.

This is definitely a thing. They used to open our local mall early on Sundays to allow people to walk around before stores open. Dozens of elderly would always be there.

They've been gigging regularly and are one of the biggest draws for corporate events, rich people parties, resorts, and casinos. Lewis has a net worth these days of $30 million. The band commands $150K+ per show. He say's he's doing just fine.

Because of American Psycho.

Trollheart 01-16-2017 07:52 PM

Or maybe because of 19 top ten singles, a bunch of really successful videos, an Academy Award nomination, 3 platinum and 2 gold albums, and 30 million in worldwide album sales?

Oh wait, I talking with "If it's popular it sucks" Frumpster.

I don't know what rich fogies trying to relive the 80s when they still understood the world listen to, but the rest of the world couldn't give a **** about Huey Lewis. They are so far beyond passe that my generation and beyond have no idea they even exist. I'm a member of this site and I didn't even know about them until a couple years ago.

But mainly American Psycho, which drove a lot of those things.

What artists from my last.fm make you think that I dislike Huey Lewis and the News for any reason other than it being garbage? Childish grudges need not apply.

Yeah, they were definitely popular in the 80s. That doesn't mean they're a great band though. I enjoy some of their songs because they're nostalgic for me, but they're not a band I ever go out of my way to listen to.

Trollheart 01-17-2017 05:17 AM

Like a lot of bands who had hits in the 80s, Huey Lewis and the News had a brief period where they were really popular (I mean, really popular: Batty you may be too young but there was a time when you couldn't turn on a radio without hearing "If this is it", and then he had that big lawsuit with Ray Parker Jr - who I hear you say? Ghostbusters theme?) - but it was a few years and then everyone forgot about them. I don't even know what was so great about them: just for one shining moment they were "the thing", then people moved on. I suppose MTV as usual had a lot to do with it. And those two movies.

But after Sports and in a smaller way Fore! I don't think anyone seriously gave a crap, and I certainly never bought any of their albums. "If this is it", "I want a new drug", "Heart of rock and roll", "The power of love" - they've been dining out on those hit singles for decades now. Look at their releases after, say, 1986: few if any broke the top 40, and as for their albums - six since Sports and by the 90s they were no longer troubling the charts, with their latest way outside even the top 100. I know chart success is not necessarily a measure of quality, but it is usually a measure of popularity, at least in general, and going from those stats, as Batty says, nobody cares about Huey Lewis any more.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 01-17-2017 05:26 AM

i think sports is good but that's the only record of there's I'll really bothers with tbh.

they played a show at a local country dance bar at like 11am on a weekday during the last stampede. when I heard about it I immediately wondered what the age demographic of those that went were. still wondering tbh

Pretty much; it's the one with all the hits on it. Fore! got to number one but it was the last time any of their albums did.

Ask anyone if they have a HL record in their collection, I'll guarantee you that if they do it's either Sports or a greatest hits, if such a thing exists.

Probably a lot of their albums are solid, but they lost their hold on the notoriously fickle pop/chart crowd after Sports. Sure, fans probably still buy their records, but only fans.

How the **** would I know about that? Like I'm sure Batty would say, **** Canada. :)

Also, I propose we all start replying to posts with "fair point" now, to annoy Ki. Surely that in itself is reason enough to adopt the idea?

heh yeah essentially it's a two week long pop-country and cowboy infused drunk fest. the city just shuts down during that time. I'm not huge on the music but it is a real wild time. just not something id expect huey lewis to be playing at.

Any of you folks been to a wedding reception here in the US? I say US because I'm assuming they might be quite different in the land of Trolls.....

There's all of the usual pomp and circumstance (introductions, speeches, dinners, son and mom dance, daughter and dad dance, etc.) And then the bar opens up, the PA gets turned up loud, high heels come off, and it's a multi-generational PARTY! A song like this will always go over well when the wedding party, parents, and even some grannies are feeling light head and strutting their stuff under the lights.

And if any member here denies they wouldn't get up and strut along with a young male or female filly they where trying to score with at the reception is a flat hour liar.

I'd never be caught dead dancing to that. That being said Huey Lewis is a pop icon for a reason. Dude is a great harmonica player along with the capability of writing top 40 pop diddies. That may mean nothing to any of us, but Huey is perfectly comfortable with who he is. And i've met him and hes one hell of a nice guy and as genuine as they come.

Your golden cow is a gilded pig.

I barely even dance to (dancable) music that I like.
