It really is awful for the elderly when it's icy out. My grandmother has minor fractures to her spine (osteoporosis) but still works two ten hour shifts a week. She gets up early in the morning, when it's the absolute iciest out, and her steps are a hazard. I've fallen down them more times than I care to admit when it's slick out.
I've been going out of my way to salt the **** out of her steps and porch so that she doesn't fall when she's leaving for work. It's something that really freaks me out, because if she slipped, that would be absolutely horrendous; minor spinal fractures due to osteoporosis coupled with a fall could mean paralysis or worse.
