My issue with the debate of vegetarianism/whatever is one thing:

Don't get defensive if a non vegetarian and a vegetarian go to a restaurant, and the non vegetarian orders a burger.

Luckily, LiL isn't disgusted with what I eat. If you're gonna be a vegetarian, that's great, but don't make others feel guilty because they aren't one.

I respect vegetarianism, but don't pretend like you can replace a burger with a mushroom and not be settling. Regardless of which you like better a fungus or a vegetable is never going to taste as good as meat when you're preparing it like you would meat. This is one thing I find annoying about vegetarians. They seem completely unwilling to admit that they're losing anything taste-wise by not eating meat. It shouldn't matter, so quit trying so hard. You're like atheists who insist on seeing atheism as some emotionally fulfilling philosophy just cause they want everything about it to be better than religion in all possible ways.

This is what happens when Frownland starts thinking. Stop making so much sense.

A question for vegetarians: if you're at a restaurant and you order something without meat or don't know that it has meat on it and they give you a plate with flesh, do you refuse it?

I don't think it's a matter of better or worse as much as it is just something different. At least in the case of a mushroom burger. Imitation meats and the like are a whole other story. Though I am fond of a brand of tofudogs that pretty accurately capture everything glorious about cheap hotdogs with 0% dead critters.

Yes. Duh. Although I'd wager it'd be hard to not realize a dish you're ordering has meat on it...

Edit: To elaborate, I ask if it'll be thrown out. Most of the time it isn't and a staff member will take it or it'll be composted. If not I take it in a box and set on top of a trashbin outside somewhere so someone who's homeless will find it.

I'm a meat eater that loves tofu.

They're just going to throw it away after you refuse it. I would wager that this is worse than killing the animal for food because the animal was killed in vain, to be just tossed in the garbage (for that portion, at least).

EDIT: Goddamnit.

It really depends on the restaurant but most of the time, at least at "nicer" places, chefs have a lot of respect for the animals they eat and don't want to waste anything or see anything go to waste. For obvious reasons it benefits them too if they're butchering their own meat.
