All sounds can be music if you declare them so of course, but just like music, a sound is not a sound wave, but the interpretation of it

1) yeah - that’s a tribute to cage’s genius

2) yes - to the individual that’s all it is - and that interpretation becomes a physical part of the individual’s consciousness

Hmmm - well, I can’t say music is only the sound waves in one post and then music is only the interpretation of sound waves in another - so like the numeral number argument I have to make another concession. I was wrong.

But the brain is the interpreter or processor making it unique because you cannot process something without the processor. But then I have to ask myself well if you’re saying it’s just material what’s unique about it. If something is unique that means it’s intrinsically different. The difference is obviously a matter of function. I want to say it’s a problem with y’all not understanding the nature of consciousness but it’s actually very apparent that everyone involved in this discussion does have an understanding of the nature of consciousness. Everyone knows it’s some kind of network of neurons and synapses that isn’t very well understood. But even with all those concessions I wish I had some alliances with my contention that it’s incorrect and harmful to make a distinction between the brain and the mind because anything that distorts the Truth that consciousness is physical distances us from proper mental healthcare.

whoo we're almost in agreement https://media.giphy.com/media/ORvraR...7phG/giphy.gif
you cannot pave a process without a processor, but that doesn't mean they're the some thing conceptually. It's also not unique that way (if that's what you mean); you can also have no music without sound waves. It is correct to make the distinction between mind and matter, and no scientists actually think that the mechanism behind consciousness isn't physical. I get you see a problem that it could confuse people into thinking otherwise though

I think you should google that and make sure because I think it’s so ingrained that it’s a deep and profound distortion pretty much found everywhere.

and it’s statements like that that cause me alarm

 I may be stuck at home in post-travel quarantine having mind/matter debates on the internet but I still have some shred of a life to hold on to

I love when people bring up 4'33 as an example of "anything can be music." It's like saying you hated Catcher in the Rye bc you find Holden Caulfield insufferable.

4:33 is the kinda thing people rep so they can pat themselves on the back for being cultured and smart

Watching fat broads fall while dancing in butter is just fun in the purest sense of the word
