The show is the start, the background is explained as it goes along.

Ep 1 is the first place to start, duh. It isn't based off a manga or anything if that's what you're asking.

I mean hell I don’t anything about manga or anime. Man I still wanna read that one where everything turns into spirals. I forgot how much of that I read but that was nuts.

The spiral manga is called Uzumaki. It's by Junji Ito, a madman horror manga writer who is essentially a genre unto himself and Uzumaki ends gloriously. There are a bunch of relatively cheap but sumptuous hardcover releases of his various series. You should start collecting them before they go out of print and become super expensive.

Just rewatched Ep 1 of Evangelion and that whole conversation with getting Shinji to pilot Unit 01 between Shinji, Misato, Gendo, and Ritsuko, eventually involving Rei's injured self, is such a perfect and horrific metaphor for life. This kid who doesn't know what's going on, doesn't know what he's supposed to do, doesn't know how to perform what all of these people expect of him, and doesn't know why this is expected of him, is thrust into a terrifying situation and guilted into societal reciprocity because children simply have no other option but to fulfill the desires and expectations of adults because at the end of the day adults don't care whether children consent to it, they just care that children rise to the task. And even the adults who have sympathy for these children forced into an impossible choice will fall into line and badger the children into obedience because they see no other option.

I thought he must have some kind of genetic connection to that rocket thing and it had to be him but still they were going to let him opt out and use that sick girl instead so he manned up. But they didn’t explain why it had to be him they were just like hop in. It seems like instead of yelling I can’t do it he’d be like why me. But I guess I’ll see why and what.

Yeah just keep watching. I'm talking metaphorical **** that isn't necessarily obvious on a first watch. I mean I've seen this in its entirety many times, started it and watched part of it more times than I can count, and read more embarrassing fan fiction than I am willing to admit. Evangelion to me is like Coltrane to you.

And he was like why me. Are you watching it in Japanese or in English? Cause he clearly asks why me in Japanese at least.

In Japanese. I was thinking my memory might be off when I was writing that. I’m using subtitles. I know most of the words in Japanese but I can’t connect them nearly fast enough without subtitles.
