While traveling with Mr. Lauer for a story, she said, he asked her inappropriate questions over dinner, like whether she had ever cheated on her husband. On the way to the airport, she said, Mr. Lauer sat uncomfortably close to her in the car; she recalled that when she moved away, he said, “You’re no fun.”
In 2001, the woman said, Mr. Lauer, who is married, asked her to his office to discuss a story during a workday. When she sat down, she said, he locked the door, which he could do by pressing a button while sitting at his desk. (People who worked at NBC said the button was a regular security measure installed for high-profile employees.)
The woman said Mr. Lauer asked her to unbutton her blouse, which she did. She said the anchor then stepped out from behind his desk, pulled down her pants, bent her over a chair and had intercourse with her. At some point, she said, she passed out with her pants pulled halfway down. She woke up on the floor of his office, and Mr. Lauer had his assistant take her to a nurse.
So he a hit a woman and had consensual sex. This is ****ing ridiculous.

[MERIT] 11-30-2017 05:34 AM

Do women not know the word "NO"? If someone asks you to unbutton your blouse and you don't want to, then DON'T DO IT. Is it really rocket science?

rubber soul 11-30-2017 06:07 AM

Of course if the person who asks you happens to be a very powerful boss...

If it’s about exploitation of power then it’s time, again, to consider what exploitation really is. What do people do for “a very powerful boss”?

The employee’s ENTIRE life is dictated by a schedule set by the boss. Be here at 7:30, be here at noon, do this tonight. Depressed? Parent died? Child died? Take a week. If you can’t get back in two weeks maybe we’re not a right fit. This isn’t meant for everyone. All we want from you is practically all your time and energy for your entire adult life. At the end of life what will you have done? You will have served “a very powerful boss”. Maybe I’m a broken record, but if you object to the power dynamic when it comes to sexuality you should object to the exploitation of billions of people’s entire lives. Unless people are willing to challenge the capitalist power structure at its core, I cannot take them seriously. She willingly unbuttoned her blouse once. Another woman “willingly” cleans his **** stains out of his toilet everyday for decades. If we want to deal with exploitation let’s do it.

Frownland 11-30-2017 06:57 AM

****ing duh.

Frownland 11-30-2017 08:39 AM

Dunno about jail, but it seems to have been forgotten so easily.

Same with that Schumer thing, it was posted and asked why we aren't talking about it but I think everybody knows why.

We don't need to teach our boys how to avoid being victims, we need to teach our moms not to rape.

I haven't broken any rules.

The Batlord 11-30-2017 10:42 AM

I think the real question is that when sexual repression dies the death it hopefully will, are we gonna end at, "Don't touch that chest like a perv!" or, "Touch that chest cause god damn is it nice... just make sure it's cool... and then go to town!" I mean the former speaks to repression, and I'm dubious that people who don't have so many hangups as the modern world do will honestly give a **** if other people appreciate their sexiness when free of Christian/Jewish/Muslim/whatever cultural norms. The modern issues with sexual harassment and whatnot seem more to do with the clash of past and modern views on sex than they do with what the cultural endgame will be. The *******s are ruining it for the rest of us I guess.

That's not to say that modern, progressive views against harassment or the issues that result from them should be ignored and vilified as so many regressives seem to think, since all that **** has very real consequences, both for individuals and society at large, but I think the question of where we're going to end up after these issues become hopefully less problems and more history that our descendents will marvel at.

If my point isn't clear then I'll try to say it better, but... the beer makes writing a bit difficult nawmsayin?

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 12-08-2017 03:55 PM

i don't really know how to feel about the whole Louis situation. no doubt he did some weird **** and took advantage of his position, but at the same time i really hope this isn't the end of his career.

While it was part of what made his scandal so shocking, his introspective nature makes me think that he can come back and strongly, too. My guess is that he will successfully buy back the film and do an online release. Then in the next year or two (or maybe concurrently with the film release) he'll release a special that focuses a lot on the scandal in a hilarious way and he'll be back while acting as a reminder that our celebrities aren't perfect.

rubber soul 12-08-2017 04:18 PM

He has a shot at a comeback. The sexual scandal craze will die down like any other fad that gets a lot of attention in the media. It would be nice if the awareness of sexual harassment in the workplace continued but, with the attention span of the average human the way it is, it will make way for some other news trend.
