Reading is important

Reading increases vocabulary
Vocabulary is directly associated to IQ

I find it slightly ironic that this post is so short. ;)

IQ tests are 'fundamentally flawed' and using them alone to measure intelligence is a 'fallacy', study finds - Science - News - The Independent

i'm reading moby dick... and well, everyone knows what that's about. i used to read a lot more than i do now. primarily classics and non-fiction. i don't know what prompted me to read such a heavy and verbose work, but the vocabulary and subject matter are a nice foray both into a world i feel i left behind some time ago and the inner-workings a man utterly wrought with true substance. so i'll stick it out.

The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz.

It's pretty awesome so far. My limited Spanish - as in, able to read or listen to Spanish and get the gist of what they're talking about, but can't remember how to actually speak it because that was not emphasized in four years of the language - makes it fine for me...but torture for my mother who is also reading it. She took French in school. She knows no Spanish, aside from the obligatory, 'Hola.'

Also, how can I seem like less of a snotty **** when people try to talk books with me at work? If one more person asks me, "What did you think of Twilight/Fifty Shades of Grey/Nicholas Sparks novel," I'm going to explode. My default response is, "Oh, it was interesting (if I've read it) but I don't remember too much about it, honestly, because I was reading several books at once. Or, "Haven't read it yet, but I have a huge stack of books I need to read before I can move on to anything else."

Is there any alternative method that will shut them the **** up without sounding like a bitch? Because I worry my replies warrant a follow-up.

I also don't want to say that said book is "not my bag," because I think that would make me sound just as snotty, and/or condescending.

Give them this when they talk about 50 shades

I can't though, Hermione. They're thoughtless milfs who think 50 Shades to be sexual power.

I'm just like, "****. I get laid without having any interest in that book. Wow."

What's all this then? :pimp:

I actually tried to read 50 Shades once and it was a horrible experience, not even just the content but the way it's written is horrid.

Plus the tampon scene

I keep hearing that it's a terribly written book. I've thought about reading it just for ****s and giggles, but I've been scarred by Fanfiction.net in the past and am leery of putting myself through that kind of irritation again. Is it really that bad?
