Heh. Yeah, I like that one a lot. The Shining one is great too. He has some other, non-Kubrick, ones that are great too:

Just watched The Cow by Iranian director Dariush Mehrjui, truly an amazing film.

It's a lot to take in, both for it's message and it's style. The style is what I really liked the most about it. Between the interesting camera angles, vivid colors and narrative structure, it's a great film to look at. It keeps the world of that movie (limited to a few apartments, a pizza shop and a single block) fresh. Also, an amazing supporting cast, especially the drunk and their interactions keep things interesting while there is little to no plot.

As for the message to take away, I think it's pretty clear about what Spike Lee is trying to say. I don't want to say much more, since it is kinda easy to spoil the ending and it's most effective cold.

8/10

On a music note, I LOVE that version of 'Fight the Power' with that free jazz sax solo and samples of tanks and helicopters.

And, talk about range...

Black Lightning
Interesting Russian contribution to the superhero genre. The main character isn't so much a superhero himself as he is a guy with a super powerful flying car. The storyline has some similarities to Spiderman but still manages to stand on its own and I enjoyed its distinctly Russian sensibility. It also had some pretty nice cinematography, presenting Moscow in a way that really made me want to go there.

It was visually marvelous, though I'm not entirely sure what I thought about the plot, symbolism, and all that.

He's also pretty fantastic in Jim Jarmusch's Night on Earth.

I'll check it out, I liked Coffee and Cigarette's and Jarmusch's works with John Lurie so I'm sure I'll dig it.

It's one of my favorite movies by him. The first segment, with Winona Ryder, is not nearly as good as the rest of the movie imo, but the other four segments are pretty stellar.

That's why I consider it the best movie I've ever seen. Not only is it visually stunning and INCREDIBLY accurate with it's science, it can be taken so many different ways. Some say the monolith represents the idea of evolution or God or aliens. Some say the whole movie is about conception and birth.

I doubt there will ever be a movie that is as stunning in it's overall presentation and the fact it is so open to interpretation only makes it more amazing that it's nearly 50 years old. A landmark in cinema, then and now.
