Sweet. All kinds of great recommendations from you lately, Thanks!

My boss, who's a huge movie buff, loved Bullhead too.

The Congress! I've been waiting for years for them to finally adapt classic Polish s-f "Kongres futurologiczny" by Stanisław Lem. And when they did, I missed it completely. Will have to catch up.
I just wonder how faithful it is to the original, but I guess I'll find out once I see it

I could go into pretentious mode and talk for hours about it, and how I interpreted it, but that wouldn't do it justice. It's just the kind of movie that you have to see for yourself.

Night of the Living Dead

*spoilers*

Finally got around to Night of the Living Dead last night. I was worried its old school-ness would turn me off, and at first it did to an extent, but the movie just got better and better and never stepped back down. By the halfway point I was already sold, but when they left the house to get supplies I realized I was watching the only zombie movie you actually need to see.

Plenty of awesome zombie movies, but the simple, streamlined story of NotLD is their distilled essence. Starts out slow, just some odd **** going down, like people just randomly attacking other people, but then escalates further and further, until that end of the news story when for what I imagine was the first time in movie history you find out that zombies are cannibals. Even though we all know this in 2016 it's a pretty heavy moment.

But then they leave the house and it's just the perfect zombie scene. The first time the main characters have dealt with zombies since finding out that they might get ****ing devoured, and the first time the zombie horde truly manifests as something more than isolated groups of ten or so. The camera angles in that scene are amazing at giving some sense of just how massive the horde is, and right at that moment I popped the biggest zombie boner ever.

It was probably the best "OH **** ZOMBIES EVERYWHERE WE ARE ****ED THE WORLD NOW BELONGS TO THE UNDEAD!!!" moment I've ever seen. And the slow, atmospheric pacing is pretty much exactly what I look for in my horror. Definitely gonna have to rewatch that movie at least ten more times before the year ends.

Every time I watch the original, I'm amazed at just how far George Romero went with it. Naked zombies, plenty of gore, a black hero - all things that were big no nos back then. Of course, Dawn of the Dead is his masterpiece, but NOLD holds a special place in zombie movie history.

Yeah that scene where you see the zombies eating is pretty ****ing gnarly. And I'd love to have seen the audience's faces when the main female character goes up the stairs and sees the half-eaten face. And yeah, even apart from just having a black lead I imagine more than a few anti-integrationists were prune-faced at seeing a black guy school some weaselly white dude... even if the white dude turned out to be right in the end... which I'm still not sure how to take as far as it being potential social commentary.

But I'd definitely take Night over Dawn. Dawn's great, but too much dodgy ****. The opening scene had so many parts that made it obvious that Romero knows **** all about how to do traditional action, and that racist psycho was OTT to the point of inducing cringe. He can also be kind of hit-or-miss with drama, and since Dawn has more character drama, it also fails more. And while the basic premise is awesome, it's still not as raw, primal, and awesomely minimalist as Night's.

I love Dawn way too much to hear any criticism of it.

Got to see Dawn in a packed theater during it's initial run.

Spoiler for Spoiler:
When the cops raid the housing project at the beginning of the movie and the zombie bites the flesh off of that cops shoulder the entire crowd in the place freaked out! No-one was expecting the gore to be so damn realistic! Total freak out movie experience.

Be honest though. That was the only notable thing about that scene.
