I like plenty of popular music. My music tastes are very similar to my movie tastes: I generally like mainstream movies/music that still maintains some artistic credibility. For example, take the Red Hot Chili Peppers or Saving Private Ryan...

It's like you're aware you're in a hole you can't get out of, but you keep on digging anyways.

Violent & Funky 08-06-2010 01:47 PM

I don't think my perspective is that difficult to comprehend and surely there are some other posters who agree with me...

Sodacake 08-06-2010 01:56 PM

It isn't comprehension that's the problem.

Just like Bungalow said, it is a form of Art that is made to challenge the mind, the psyche and your life's philosophy. If you're too lazy to think during films, don't expect movie lovers to just enjoy films with no content, or just for the "incredible visual experience".

If you can just replace Films, music and books with baseball, than there's something very wrong on the intellectual level (nothing personal).

Just watched this for the second time. I enjoyed it, but on a second viewing I've realized I much prefer some of Pixar's other films.

bungalow 08-06-2010 04:10 PM

i say it every time someone mentions that film--the first ~45 minutes are absolutely brilliant, and then they fucked it all up.

storymilo 08-06-2010 04:14 PM

The whole sequence at the beginning is pretty awesome. My favorite part is actually before Eve arrives. The loneliness is pretty intense.

glastonelle 08-06-2010 04:16 PM

I love the film Wall-E  Its pretty damn adorable. Wish someone would do all that just to see me. Just, preferbly not a robot. Although he is rather lovely :D

I really want to get this on DVD. I thought it was fantastic, and definitely want to see it again.

bungalow 08-06-2010 04:17 PM

yeah there is so much depth and meaning created without any words. it is beautiful, like a chaplin film or something.

storymilo 08-06-2010 04:24 PM

Well all I've seen is Modern Times, but besides having very few words I wouldn't call them similar movies at all.

Though I think I get what you're saying. They manage to evoke emotion without words, which is an impressive thing.

bungalow 08-06-2010 04:29 PM

wall-e himself is pretty heavily based on chaplin's tramp character. the influence is undeniable if you watch, say, city lights. and it's not that it is so impressive per say, as it is unconventional to find in a massively marketed, modern studio film. emotion is/was evoked all the time without the use of words, especially in silent film, but also music/painting/photography etc.

storymilo 08-06-2010 05:12 PM

Well, I'd say a good painting/photograph/silent film/instrumental song that manages to stir some emotion is impressive. Even if it's been done before, it's still a feat.

That's also not art's only purpose. We can argue the definition of art all-day but this is Wikipedia's definition:

Quote:

Art is the process or product of deliberately arranging elements in a way to affect the senses or emotions.
I'm not trying to hang my hat on a wiki definition but merely trying to express that art can be interpreted differently by all individuals. Some, like me, may focus on the visual and captivating qualities of film.

By the way, you guys are pretending like my favorite movie is Transformers or something.

Eh, you're selling baseball as a hobby short but that doesn't surprise me. I get more intellectually stimulated by a baseball game than most movies, the artsy ones included...

Sodacake 08-06-2010 08:17 PM

Maybe if you weren't saying such stupid crap like a blithering idiot people wouldn't be jumping on you for it. Intellectually stimulated by a baseball game? Jesus christ, you're helpless.

so where does this translate to 60s films being of lower quality? the film stock in the 1960s was the same as it is now. 35mm film is 35mm film. there is no degradation in quality. if all you care about is the improvements in cgi it's you who's making it seem like your favorite movie is transformers.

the films of andrei tarkovsky or teshigahara or antonioni or various other 60s filmmakers are far more visually captivating than anything i've seen recently.

Fuck you! So much for being open-minded about stuff. Read some of the stuff on this site or this site and tell me that's not intellectually stimulating. Baseball is as much a part of American culture as film is. I guess I shouldn't expect a music forum to understand where I'm coming from.

They look old because they're from the 1960s. I mean I don't know what you can't understand about that. Some are in black-and-white, the color is usually grainy looking, everything is just so before my time. I just watched Grindhouse: Death Proof the other night--which is going for that old-school look--and I enjoyed it. Maybe I would like older movies, but from what I've seen I haven't enjoyed them. I don't know what to say...

bungalow 08-07-2010 12:09 AM

okay but those are blogs about baseball. not baseball.

how often do you watch baseball games V&F?

I know there is a punchline coming but:

I'd say I watch three or four games a week, while checking box scores and highlights several times daily. I have four fantasy baseball teams, contribute to a baseball forum, and read plenty of baseball blogs. I umpire on the side for a little money, and was at the Detroit Tigers game Wednesday night...

debaserr 08-07-2010 12:31 AM

wow. how do you do it. i usually fall asleep if i try to watch a game on tv. i stopped watching altogether about two or three years ago. i dvr sportscenter and skip all baseball highlights. i feel fresher for the rest of my day. i get groggy after naps.

well this is just really shallow to be honest. any image-quality degradation in older films comes from the film stock itself getting weathered/dirty/torn and generally being mishandled or stored improperly. a well-restored or well-preserved film from the 1960s (which really isn't that old) is just as crisp and fresh looking as anything today, often moreso because it is certain to not be digital. and if you buy the film from a dvd company that takes pride in their restorations and dvd-transfers the image quality is never an issue. but of course you would have to have taken an interest in the film, procured a dvd, and put it in your player to discover this.

bungalow 08-07-2010 12:34 AM

my condolences that you had to go to detroit.

I love the sport and everything about it? I find the game's lulls part of what makes it so beautiful and what makes each pitch so unimportant yet so important because you never know when something is gonna happen. It keeps ya on your toes...

It wasn't as good as Death Proof, although it offered plenty of entertainment. I'm not really one for zombie movies...

debaserr 08-07-2010 01:16 PM

whaaaaaaaaat? planet terror kicked so much ass for a b movie. it was funny as hell and had some fun action scenes and lots of gore. but i have a soft spot for zombie-comedies. i was fairly surprised how clunky the dialogue was in death proof. it had some moments but i consider it among tarantino's worst efforts.

downwardspiral 08-07-2010 01:19 PM

omg grindhouse (L)

Funny, or awkward. And the gore wasn't just blood, it was like popping those oozing infections... ewww.

Death Proof was slow and clunky in its extended version but I'm guessing the theatrical version was better. And Kurt Russell was just insanely badass killing people with his stunt car...

it certainly had some moments i had to turn away(notably the balls). gore infections just add more life to the gore, making it more fun.

trust me the theatrical version was extremely clunky...

Well kind of... I fell asleep through a large portion of the middle half so when I woke up I didn't know what the fuck was going on. I then decided to turn it off from there because I had no clue as to what was happening. I really liked Jennifer Connelly in this film too, she has MASSIVE amounts of sex appeal without feeling overly pampered in terms of make-up. It's really great for the viewer because it gives you a reminder of what true beauty is all about.

Violent & Funky 08-07-2010 03:58 PM

Damn, man, I'm gonna be watching that one in a few days...

A very well made indie film and great soundtrack to go with it (surprising use of Noir Desire's "Le vent nous portera").

I'm loving this Era of Teenage Nerdy Love films.
And we can finally see another side of Cera.
