I finally got around to seeing "Death of Stalin", the 2017 controversial comedy that got banned in Russia.
It was a lot less funny than I thought it would be, though it was pretty funny and hilarious at times.
It was a lot more scary than I thought it would be, the Stalinist terror is still terror, even if shown through an absurd lense.
The cast was just as amazing as I assumed it would be, I only wish Jason Isaacs (playing marshall Zhukow) would get more screen time, he stole every scene he was in, but it would be a different movie then.
The story seems to follow or mimic what happened in real life very closely, which any history aficionado with a sense of humor will appreciate. It won't be much of a spoiler, given the title, the movie is about the power struggle after the dictator died, ,focusing mostly on Khruschev (Buscemi is wonderful in this role) and Beria, the head of the secret police, played by an actor I don't recognize by name, but who managed to show just how big an immoral ******* Beria was.
Generally I'd give this a solid 8/10. It's not a movie for everybody, not good material for a date, you do have to stay glued to it, you have to listen to what is being said.
I loved it.
