Saw The Witch last night, I loved every second of it. 10 people walked out of the theater within the first 10 minutes.

Visitor Q is obviously the third-most famous Miike movie, and I've read enough about it to be really, really intrigued, and The Happiness Of The Katakuris likewise sounds gloriously bizarre and awesome (don't remember Gozu, but that might just be because it doesn't have as notable a name as a lot of his movies. Also really interested in The Bird People of China, as it sounds really cool and unique. Even with only seeing the first third of a single one of his movies the man sounds like one of the most truly out there, creative, and diverse directors I've ever heard about. He's even made children's movies, apparently?(!) |

Have ya'll seen The Mark of the Devil? It's pretty old so I'm sure the special effects don't hold up but the premise of the movie lends to a ton of really depraved brutality. This is the flick that when it was in the theaters they actually gave you a barf bag along with your ticket.

While Ichi is gory as ****, it's first and foremost hilarious in a totally ****ed up way. As are the other movies I rec'd. The Bird People Of China is an awesome movie as well. But it's more of a thoughtful comedy drama and not the sick stuff one expects from Miike. Definitely entertaining and very well made though and totally worth a watch. A girl I used to date was really into Miike so I have seen 2-3 dozen of his movies. The quality realy varies. Which is understandable since he has done so many movies. A handful are gold though and a few more handfuls really entertaining. Three of his best movies are even from the same year. |
I'm thinking about getting around to Funny Games soon, and I haven't heard that there's a big difference in quality between the original and the remake, and I'd rather watch a film I don't have to read, all things being equal. Should I do the original first or does it not matter?

I like the acting in the first one better, but they're basically identical otherwise.

Absolutely kick ass film. Spooky with an incredible building sense of dread. Brilliant acting, brilliantly shot, superb score...if you love intellectual horror you need to see this. |

I can see why 6 year old girls like this. Everyone else has no excuse. |
So are cartoon musicals back "in?" I mean, this and The Princess and the Frog were pretty big.
|
I hope not, I thought the songs were obnoxious. Could have cut back on them a lot.

If people can mail letters to Santa, I don't see why he shouldn't run his own mail service.

Caught The Untouchables last night. Seen it at least a dozen times. What an awesome period piece. What a cast too.

Am I the only one who has a serious thing for Cate Blanchett that they can't entirely define? And she's playing a lesbian in this movie? Sold. |
I'm not usually attracted to blondes but yeah, gorgeous

I just watched a godawful trainwreck called The Last Dragon. All through the 70s, Barry Gordy, the lead producer of Motown Records, was doing fine. Then the 80s happened. The Motor City tanked, synth music took over, and Barry had the brilliant idea of trying his hand at filmmaking. Though he'd go on to produce a small pile of documentaries about himself, his one lone venture into creative cinema was this sh*tstorm of a kung fu music movie.
20 minutes of the film consists of the actors watching Bruce Lee movies. And those are by far the best parts of the feature. Bursting with Jheri curl, neon dancefloors, prop boomboxes, and day-glo costume design, this film stands as a sobering reminder that we can never let the abomination that was the 80s ever happen again. |
Now you're ready to up the ante. (actually a pretty fun film)

So bad it's good? |
It was really shockingly bad, an all-time low for Motown, but it was every bit as overindulgent and self-absorbed as the decade itself so it was hilarious to watch.

I saw this yesterday, by pure luck - it was on tv and I was just supposed to turn it off an start a game, but I saw Tom Hanks and decided to give it a shot... 3 hours later (the movie itself is 2h long, but I had to endure an hour of commercials..) I was really glad I did, though I have to say it was an emotional rollercoaster to put it mildly. I don't think I've ever seen a movie that is as sad as this one, and so cheerful and energetic at the same time. So emotionally shattering and inspiring at the same time. I rarely see movies like this -they bore me. When people get emotional I get frustrated.. but not here. And to be honest I'm not sure why. From the reviews it seems most people either love this movie or hate it, either find the depth I found or can't find a trace of it. One thing many reviewers seem to miss is that the boy is mildly autistic, this explains much of his seemingly bizarre behavior. Anyway, I found the whole experience absolutely stunning. The movie broke me emotionally and then fixed me back up. And to be honest I think it actually helped me with some of my personal issues. Give it a try. |
Tonight movie feature: DOWNLOADED (2013) by Alex Winter (Bill S. Preston, Esq.) with music by DJ Spooky.
It's the full story of the young dudes who built Napster and the explosion of file sharing that followed its demise, with an incredible amount of personal footage from 1994-2000. Highly recommended. |

Seen it. Love it. Makes me want to be a college student in the late 90's (and who doesn't?) One of my favorite documentaries actually. |

Reminded me of this classic.

I didn't think I could despise Lars Ulrich any more than I already did. Then I saw the film's footage of his Napster publicity stunt. Ulrich phoned up every news network, set up a podium in front of Napster headquarters, and delivered cases upon cases of form feed paper printouts of every Napster username sharing Metallica tracks to their office in person. He'd made no previous attempt to contact Napster... he just tried to publicly shame them out of existence. What an a**. |

Anyway, I've found that the best movies I've seen, the ones I personally rate the highest, are also the movies many of my friends absolutely abhorred. Watchmen is a great example - I fell in love with the movie, the visuals, the music (and the plot, though I had read the comics before). But many of my friends thought it was pointless and cliche and plain silly. The way I see it, the truly valuable movies are those that leave no one indifferent. This is one of those movies - you will be hard pressed to find someone that saw it and said "meh, it was ok". You'll either love it or loathe it, and despite what some elitists might think, neither of those options means anything really. |

Saw 10 Cloverfield Lane tonight. Absolutely loved it. If you're on the fence, go see it. If you didn't like the first one...still go see it because it's nothing like the first one

Watchmen was great. Tentacle monster would have been too much for those who had never read the book. Putting it on Dr. Manhattan made for a much more cohesive story. |
