A documentary which challenges former Indonesian death-squad leaders to reenact their mass-killings.

It's been in my queue for a long time as well.

Last night watched "Snake in the Eagle Shadow"

innerspaceboy 02-18-2016 09:01 PM

Tonight's movie was Troll (1986). Not to be confused with the "best-worst-movie" Troll 2, which was produced by entirely different people and is of no relation to Troll.

For the unfamilar, Troll is the story of a boy named Harry Potter who learns to be a wizard. (Seriously. That's the plot.)

The film starred Noah Hathaway (best known as Atreyu from The Neverending Story), Julia Louis Dreyfus as a whackjob, Sonny f***ing Bono, and June Lockhart (yes - HER) as a witch.

To add insult to injury, the film was scored by Richard Band who very likely was president of his high school's Danny Elfman fanclub.

It was every bit as terrible as it sounds, and I loved it.

Taxi Driver. Chilling and brilliant every time.

Like Dear Hunter, a timeless classic that will never be duplicated in regard to its reflection of a particular time.

We share a very similar taste in movies DC.

This could be a Nicholas Sparks book title where a couple meets, does couple stuff for a while, then one of them dies.

innerspaceboy 02-19-2016 07:32 PM

Just watched the 1960 film adaptation of H.G. Wells' The Time Machine. As a child I romanticized and fantasized about one day having an Edwardian manor like the scientist's. So thrilled that it's finally come true.

Chula Vista 02-21-2016 11:35 PM

Finally got around to watching The Blind Side. Paint by numbers sentimental stuff but saved by a great performance by Bullock. Her Oscar was totally deserved. All the rest of the leads were solid too.

DeadChannel 02-21-2016 11:46 PM

Delicatessen: Gilliam-esque absurdist black comedy. Bizarre in a good way. Obviously, I love **** like this.

The Act of Killing: Holy ****.

Riberry 02-23-2016 03:45 AM

Watching right now Krish 3. Really amazing enjoying a lot.

Saw it twice already, tremendous fucking film. Also, he mentions Batman? Twice. I understand FOX made this film and they have the rights to X-Men of course, so to my knowledge they can't mention the Disney Marvel franchise at all, but Batman? Something fishy about that.

JGuy Grungeman 02-23-2016 12:44 PM

Duck Dogers, during a Green Lantern episode, made mention of Spider-Man. Plus, Deadpool's also a comedy. How is this out of the ordinary? Besides, Fox also distributes the Gotham TV series.

DeadChannel 02-23-2016 01:05 PM

Funny Games (1997): Really solid Austrian psychological thriller. Haneke did a great job. There are a few moments of legitimate genius (that one super long take!). Haneke did a great job, although I'm not sure how I feel about the movie as a comment on media violence.

That's such a great movie, I really love the humour in it as well.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 02-23-2016 04:17 PM

Have you seen the American version? It was also directed by Haneke. I've heard it's better than the original but I can't say since I've only seen the American.

DeadChannel 02-23-2016 05:24 PM

^No, but I intend to.

Yeah. Plus, any movie that uses Naked City in the sound track is going to be dope.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 02-23-2016 06:14 PM

I need to watch more Haneke films tbh, I was blown away with Funny Games, and I keep hearing great things about Caché. I started the White Ribbon awhile back but only got half way through and at this point I'll need to start it again from the beginning.

Frownland 02-23-2016 06:18 PM

The White Ribbon is his best imo. Cache, The Piano Teacher, and Amour are all well worth the watch as well.

I have all three of those downloaded (lol piracy) and one of my friends found The White Ribbon on blu-ray for $5 the other day so I might just wait and borrow it from him sometime soon.

Justthefacts 02-23-2016 10:22 PM

I enjoy the remake more, I think each actor's better than the first ensemble. I've yet to see Amour, it's killing me I haven't yet.

grindy 02-23-2016 11:14 PM

Benny's Video is also pretty good.
One of the killers from Funny Games plays the lead role.
The dads in both movies are also played by the same actor.

Frownland 02-23-2016 11:18 PM

Also a great one, but kind of pales in comparison to his discography imo.

Agreed. Still cool though. I like to see it as a prequel to Funny Games.

Frownland 02-23-2016 11:39 PM

I remember when movies were only on discs. Damn kids and their digital crap.

JGuy Grungeman 02-24-2016 09:10 AM

VHS's were the bomb. I still get nostalgic over the commercials from old Disney VHS's. Sadly, m Lion King VHS doesn't have all the commercials, so it kills the vibe. Still, I got an amazing movie to follow up afterwards.

I ave a few VHS's. Too bad my Pee Wee VHS stops working after "What makes you think the Soviets were involved?"

Justthefacts 02-24-2016 02:54 PM

My VHS collection outnumbers all of yours combined.

I have a nostalgia for VHS too. There's a pretty solid collection at my parents' house from when I was a kid. My brother was born in 2000 so he didnt really get to experience it to the same extent I did but yeah I wuv em

Loved it. So happy that they didn't go with the cartoon character with the goofy voices in his head that Deadpool became later on. There was so much from the Joe Kelly run from the late nineties and it was awesome. Also loved all the references to Reynold's failed appearances in Green Lantern and X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

JGuy Grungeman 02-25-2016 02:33 PM

Oh, yeah. He was Green Lantern.

Tangerine

This film had really great realism and gritty lighting that I really enjoyed, but it felt too much like a rehash of Crash (although the web of intermingling stories approach is handled better by this film). It was certainly thought provoking, interesting, and captivating throughout, but I wasn't wowed by any means either, placing it on the verge of being something great. I'd give it a 6/10.

The Batlord 02-26-2016 11:23 AM

Watched The Texas Chainsaw Massacre for the first time last night. Why exactly is it so highly rated? There were definitely some good scenes: the part where the one girl enters the house and stumbles upon the bone altar was legitimately unsettling, the scene after that where she is hung up on a meat hook and watches her boyfriend get dismembered was sweet, and the dinner scene was pretty original.

But in a lot of ways it was simply a mildly entertaining exploitation flick. At no point was I ever scared (but I don't really get scared by movies, so horror films generally have to have other things going for them, and this movie did not), the only memorable protagonist was the crippled brother, the villains were too cartoonish to take seriously, the atmosphere was severely lacking, and the dinner scene, while entertaining, had so many ludicrous cuts (as in editing cuts) and over-the-top screaming from the main character that it went from genuinely creepy to just plain goofy in a very short span of time.

I'd honestly take the remake over the original. It might not be brilliant by any stretch of the imagination, but the opening scene with the crime scene footage was phenomenal, the kills were more exploitatively delicious, and... that guy from Full Metal Jacket's character was amazing.

Frownland 02-26-2016 11:45 AM

Because it's awesome and the creepy disturbing vibe is executed (heh) really well.

Meh. I honestly didn't get much of any kind of vibe for most of the movie. That first kill, where Leatherface just opens a door and matter-of-factly hits the guy in the head with a hammer, sealed the deal for me that I wasn't going to give much of a **** about the movie. I get that the director was going for a spontaneous-looking shot that you were expecting, just not in the way that it was executed, but it still felt like, "Oh, I guess that happened... so... next scene?"

Frownland 02-26-2016 12:12 PM

Not even the opening scene where the hitchhiker cuts his hand? Maybe you just suck at watching movies.

I forgot about that. Yeah, that was pretty sweet. Leatherface's brother was probably the best villain in that movie.

And maybe you're just a puss.

The Batlord 02-26-2016 12:31 PM

And can we at least agree that...

A.) The opening scene from the remake was the best thing in either film.

And B.) That when Chula inevitably shows up and says, "Back then... no one was doing that!" we both mock his bull****?
