Well Spanish films are usually very sexually charged so I wouldn't necessarily blame it on his gayness. And Almodovar is an entirely different bag of chips...

Btw, I'm not criticizing sex in gay films, but I'd like them not to rely on it alone and the good looks of the actors to sell the film (like Shelter for example, which is a terrible film but which seems to rank very highly within gay circles...presumably because of the good looks of the actors...didn't see much else going for it...:/)

Did you see Milk by any chance? If so what did you think of it
I did indeed. I liked it well enough, but having seen The times of Harvey Milk prior it didn't really stand a chance to having anywhere near the same emotional impact as the documentary.

I only watched one of them and thought it was enough for me. It was something called "Como el gato y el raton" (literally translated "like the cat and mouse"). Really bad movie!!

*** I guess it's the same in all the countries where there are no big movies. Like 2 years ago, there was a Lebanese movie that made it to Canne. Of course all the Lebanese saw it as one of the best movies of all time, tho in reality it was only a good average movie. But it was the best Lebanon had ever seen.
So people can get biased, I guess that's why the embassy wanted to show us such a shitty movie.

yeah makes sense I guess, certain countries have comparatively underdeveloped film industries (still), that's the Hollywood monopoly coming into play I guess. But still, you wouldn't think that should preclude the possibility of a country having talented filmmakers or good writers? Gah

I guess it should. All the surrounding countries have magnificent movies (and usually low budget). Tho in my experience, if I want to talk about Lebanon and the 21 surrounding Arabic countries, I don't think there is much (and that's since the creation of cinema). There are many short movies or documentaries, never a good feature film.

* I guess we can say Youssef Chahine is an exception, but I don't think a person is enough for more than a whole century of cinema.

Nice movie as I remember, tho I don't really know why.
Just cared for Gael Garcia Bernal in that movie, and it wasn't the best of Alfonso Cuaron.

Sigur Rós - Heima

Beautiful. Memorable. Uplifting.

Can't find enough superlatives for this cinematic masterpiece. I guess it helped being a fan of Sigur Rós and having a long running infatuation with the country of Iceland, but I think I would have enjoyed it just as much if I didn't have this predisposition. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was amazing. If you aren't aware of the premise, it's basically documenting a tour of Iceland undertaken by Sigur Rós after finishing their World tour. They visited an array of isolated, remote and desolate locations to perform a free concert for these remote communities.

The film really caputured the spirit of the country, and the beauty and ethics which have influenced the music of Sigur Rós. They perform in a disused factory (affected by the decline in the fishing industry) and in a potential damming site for HEP and aluminium industry. This incorporates some of the burning issues involved with Icelandic politics, giving a brief insight into some of the contrasting attitudes of different communities. Along with this, the main selling point is obviously the beautiful and enchanting music, coupled with images of Iceland. It's amazing to see the sense of community in thie country, with whole families turning up ranging from grandparents to children, and everyone in between.

I was really moved by the beauty of this film. The end track is epic and a worthy ending for a stunning piece of cinema. I'm sure fans of cinema in general would enjoy this film, as well as fans of the band too. I'd definitely recommend it!

I have an urge to share this every time someone mentions Heima, but I almost cried at the end of Se Lest from pure joy...great stuff.

Just saw Donnie Darko. Had no idea it was about Halloween but it turned out to be a pretty appropriate pick.

I think it was pretty god, maybe a little overrated though cause some people had told me it was fantastic. I won't ruin the plot but I'll say it's very creepy and intriguing, not so much full blown horror but it will get under your skin. If you haven't seen it and are in the mood for a movie like it, I would suggest seeing it.

7.5/10
