Watched Wristcutters: A Love Story over the weekend. Enjoyable but not that great either. I just love staring at Shannyn Sossamon. I wish she was in more movies.

1. think of every survival horror film you've ever seen that takes place on a derelict spaceship.
2. mash their plots all together into a single, barely coherent mass.
3. fill it with the flattest, most forgettable characters imaginable.
4. give dennis quaid the lead.
5. add a happy ending.

it's nice to look at, i'll give it that. but as for plot, there's nothing here that you haven't seen before...

Leave out 4 and 5 and it sounds a lot like the video game Dead Space

Standard piece of kitchen sink drama, commendable for the provocative subject matter (for that time) - interracial relationships, teenage pregnancy, homosexuality (although only implied) but I have to be honest and say I wasn't really engaged. I liked Saturday night, Sunday morning much more, probably because of Finney's commanding presence. Great acting though.

I like semi-autobiographical art so it was rather interesting guessing which bits were truth and which fiction but I have to say I prefer his non-"intellectual" films.

Offret (The Sacrifice) (1986) - Tarkovsky

Like most of his films, it was a chore to finish. What can I say, I'm a philistine. His later work is a little easier to understand (unlike say, The mirror or Stalker) but I don't care for theatracalities or contemplative grandstanding (I have nothing against it, I just don't respond to it well). The documentary on the second disc, "Directed by Tarkovsky", was particularly grating with the thoughtful baritone narrator poetically ruminating on his life's work. Couldn't watch more than a few minutes of it. Plus, I sort of mind that some of his most spectacular visual shots (levitating for example and the abundant use of dripping water) have been recycled in several films. In short, I was very bored. But hey, now I can say I've watched all his films...woot. :\

Standard noir, with a plot a tad too convoluted and drawn out. The cast is great though.

i also prefer SN&SM, and you're right the acting is great (adapted from a play? could be mistaken) but i would love it just for the accents and vintage if nothing else. you'd be surprised, the casual film-goer is not usually aware that we made such gritty films in the 60s.. i guess you could file this under British new wave?



FW Murnau ('im who directed that Nosferatu) with what i understand is his most lauded film, and was made in 1927 after his move to Hollywood. He has gone straight in a sense, but stylistically it's not straight-down-the-line classical H'wood, otherwise it'd just be a dated melodrama.
I had to watch this for my course, and being half asleep I decided to watch the whole thing to 'Black Sea' by XTC. Your brain has a way of synching these elements together.

i enjoyed that game actually. yeah the story was a bit dull, but the action was good. once you got over the weird over-the-shoulder perspective.

i just woke up to see that Left4Dead 2 is out in the wild. no good crack yet but i grabbed it anyway, and by the weekend i'll be blasting zombies. sweet!

had it coming

I watched that film for the first time last night, a brilliant film with a brilliant soundtrack. I'm downloading the entire Air discography right now :)
