I got up unusually early this morning and this was left in the DVD player in the lounge, so I indulged. I didn't think it was that bad really. There were some pretty funny bits here and there, and Ricky Gervais turned in a good performance. It was kind of undone by all the conventions of the rom-com genre in the end though - got a bit predictable and a little too sugary towards the end then.

It was surprisingly good. Baz Luhrmann is a really good director and the cinematography was pretty awesome. But I think only Australians appreciate it. A lot of people from other places in the world don't really know much of the history and the relevance of it to today (and when the PM said sorry to the aboriginal people) so yeah.

I was glad it didn't end I like I thought it would, the reporter and young firefighter living happily ever after?

I always expect movies to have a stupid ending like that, nowadays.

I liked it. It was sad though cause my first dog died the same exact way...

I thought this was going to be like a romantic comedy or something but everyone told me it was a really sad film. They totally didn't promote it as such.

Vernon, Florida
Ever been on a train or in a bar or at a party where some socially retarded person corners you into listening to some pointless, rambling monologue about their job, their hobby or their relationship with their parents? That's exactly what this movie feels like. Back in the early 80s Errol Morris, the guy who made The Thin Blue Line, went to the little podunk town of Vernon, Florida and filmed various residents flapping their gums about whatever they felt like talking about. Not surprisingly the movie is an excruciatingly boring viewing experience. It's only 55 minutes long but it feels like about five hours. It's also considered kind of a cult classic but damned if I know why. This is seriously one of the worst documentaries I've ever seen.

I saw Year One today:

Boring and stupid at times, but had its fair share of funny bits. Plus Michael Cera is tre cute; I have a thing for awkward dorky guys.

cardboard adolescent 06-23-2009 01:43 AM

No Such Thing by Hal Hartley, it was an entertaining enough dark comedy.

I went and was The Hangover a few nights ago.

****in' hilarious.

I watched Pale Rider at home a couple days after that.

Clint Eastwood is the best Western actor ever. Eternal badass.

Just saw Transformers 2. It was exactly what you'd expect from a Michael Bay film... a badass action movie. Also, Sam had a Smiths poster hanging in his room, which was cool.

Astronomer 06-24-2009 01:50 AM

^ Can't wait to see this. Just saw the preview to it yesterday and it looked pretty damn awesome.

I'm jealous, I've been pressuring my boyfriend to hurry up and take me to it!

This is my latest movie watching:

Soooo cute. I was a bit confused at what the storyline was going to be at first but then got with it and became extremely attached to Marley the dog. The ending which I won't spoil made me cry so hard, my flatmates were emotional too.

This movie was really strange. I don't really know what to think of it. I can't say I really enjoyed it personally. It wasn't bad acting but the plot was not my scene.

^ One of the very few academy award-studded movies that hasn't bored me sh1tless. Great acting, fascinating script, very well-worked plot - it's all terrific dramatic writing.

hahaha I remember seeing it in school and yeh it was pretty awful. I actually lost what little respect I had for both actors after watching it.

Aww I adore this movie.

Scarlett O'Hara 06-26-2009 02:51 AM

^ Why? The only cute part of the movie is Wall-e calling "Eva" and vice versa. That also gets old very fast. I wouldn't go through that movie again if someone paid me.

bungalow 06-26-2009 04:02 PM

Maybe people like movies for other reasons beside "it's cute"?

I thought it was a really great. How irrational love defeats life's programming. For a children-targeted movie I thought it was one of the best.

Ugh. Obviously. But I can't see in any way how it would be enjoyable, that's why I was asking.

I saw The Hangover yesterday and I just don't see how people think it's oh so over the top funny. Sure it has it's funny points here and there but it's not greatness imo.

I also saw Transformers 2 and I loved every second of it. Every time there was more explosive action going on all I could do was laugh to myself thinking of that Michael Bay commercial for Verizon Fios where he's all like blowing stuff up at his house.

I loved it! The only thing I didn't care for was the cutesy-cuteness between Megan Fox and Shia Lebouf. Lame. Also, I saw it on the IMAX, which was fine except that we were sitting way too close to the screen so alot of the action scenes were very hard to follow. I'd like to see it again on a regular screen.
