No. And I'm not saying he's wrong for not liking the films, it's just that slapping a 6 on a film like The Cranes are Flying with no explanation is sort of suspect. His explanations a few posts up are perfect, just a sentence or two to justify assigning a number to a film.

Oh and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing The letter never sent and Soy Cuba from Kalatozov, especially the former after seeing some screen shots. Check this shit out:

The second time I have seen this and still as enjoyable as ever. I love the fact that although the charcters could be classed as 'quirky', that is never emphasied and instead the characters are well rounded. a fantastic feel good movie.

For about the twentieth time. Still the greatest rites of passage movie ever.

BamBam 08-12-2009 10:02 AM

On LOST right now..season 3 at the moment...slightly losing interest, but cannot give it up just yet.

Akira 08-12-2009 10:03 AM

Once you get past season 3 it picks up a bit again.

It was long overdue and it was pure awesomeness.

i re-watched The Wall last night, the last time i watched it was more than a year ago.

i remembered it to be amazing now it seemed just a a good movie that could've been great. but the animations in there still seem breath-taking.

Akira 08-12-2009 10:44 AM

It makes me sad that 'another brick in the wall' was number 1 when I was born.

Still, for my money, the greatest film of all time.

District 9-
The first half an hour is crazy, never seen anything similiar. The rest of the movie is a little more formulaic, reminding me of E.T.

That said, i really enjoyed the movie, and am excited for a sequel.

djchameleon 08-15-2009 05:16 AM

I finally got a chance to see This is England and it's one of those movies that touched me after viewing it. I had the same feeling after seeing Gran Torino. I rented it but I will definitely purchase it once I get the chance to. At first I just thought that it was a UK version of American History X but I was wrong.

The trailer makes it look like a **** reel. But yours is the 2nd semi-positive review I've heard so I might try and catch it tonight.

sidewinder 08-15-2009 12:52 PM

Last night I watched Les Poupées Russes, and last week I watched the first part, L'Auberge Espagnole. I really liked these movies. :thumb:

Yay! I'm glad to see you've given it a decent review. I've been wanting to see it and with alien sci-fi it can really go either way...downhill fast or epic adventure. So now I'm really looking forward to it!

Sparky 08-15-2009 04:05 PM

It's definitely a lot of fun. Only summer block buster I've enjoyed seeing this year/

I pretty much agree with what reviewers are saying about this. It's hilarious, but drags on way too long at the end. Solid B+ though, Adam Sandler's best movie in a a very long time.

Akira 08-16-2009 10:02 AM

Layed off it for a while and finally watched Master and Commander: Far Side of the World. Pretty much enjoyed it, apart from the lull in the middle. I just wish someone better than Russell Crowe was the lead. But I'm really interested in both that era of military and also naval shenanigans of that time and for the most part it was highly accurate, fictional accounts aside.

savannah 08-16-2009 10:04 AM

julie and julia, which was actually really really good

if you're interested in french movies you must watch Amelie Poulain if you haven't watched it yet. It's played by Audrey Tautou [the character Martine in "L'auberge Espagnole"]
... or of The city lost children by the same director [jean-Pierre Jeunet]

^I've loved this movie ever since I first saw it twenty years ago. I didn't understand all of it back then, but rewatching it now was even better and made me appreciate it even more.

^Terrible dialogue, hokey story line. Brandon Lee and Dolph Lundgren. I love it.

^I remembered I loved this movie when I was little. I saw my mom had it and stole it from her, gave it a view last night. It's terrible and great at the same time. It goes through stages where it's definitely geared for young kids, and then parts that make you want to cover your kids eyes. It's cute mostly, good for a trip down memory lane anyway.

simplephysics 08-16-2009 03:02 PM

If you wanna sing out, sing out!

I love harold & maude, it's one of my favorite films.

Akira 08-16-2009 04:25 PM

The Wizard of Oz on the big screen. Perfect. Every time.

Alas, still yet to get an original 1939 movie reel of this, which would be one of the top movies in my collection.

NumberNineDream 08-16-2009 10:55 PM

I just watched My life without me ... that's a pretty good movie.
i had watched two movies by Isabel Coixet, but they were too drama-queen material ... but in this one, the dialogue was really good.

http://www.foxmovies.com.au/content/...thout%20Me.jpg

and the actress Sarah Polley is incredible ...

What a fantastic trilogy of films and something for everyone.

Watched this again, not as brilliant as people like to make out but it's a good solid movie with some great performances, always a joy to watch.

I stand by my statement that Nicholas Cage plays the best pair of twins ever filmed in that movie. Brilliant.

^ It was alright I suppose. I didn't really find Stockard Channing or Donald Sutherland's lead characters very interesting, but the story was otherwise well thought-out with enough dramatic elements in it to make it work. Decent enough in other words.

^ I did enjoy this one a lot more though. Great little mockumentary about the eponymous Australian plumber. Really good character that it all revolves around - quite interesting how he manages to keep up his sense of common decency and putting others before him in the face of having such a raw deal in life.

I didn't think it was brilliant until i've seen how Charlie Kaufman really looks like, and his twin to be the first fictional character to win an oscar ... now that's brilliant !

Akira 08-17-2009 07:08 PM

Hearts in Atlantis

The first time I saw it the ending completely destroyed me I have no idea why.

Thankfully, this time it didn't have the same effect.

Could you elaborate? Me and my buddy are in argument over what to see next friday, District 9 or Inglourious Basterds. I'm leaning towards District 9 but he's more into Inglourious Basterds.

I have seen both of those, thanks anyway as I do really want to see more films like this. I liked Amelie a lot, I should watch it again soon as it's been a long time. I could stand to watch The City Lost Children again too, actually. I have seen many of the French ones available through Netflix, though still have some in the queue. I like other language films too.

District 9 is the kind of epic they just don't make anymore. It touches on a lot of social issues, it looks amazing, it really pulls you into the story, and it has some pretty badass moments. it's a roller coaster ride, and manages to avoid a lot of action movie cliches.
