I'll second X-Com, it's a complete classic - the best strategy game I've ever played. But be prepared to suck at first until you get the hang of things, the learning curve is pretty steep. Things can go horribly wrong very quickly...

By the way .. There's an offer on Batman: Arkham Asylum on Steam now. 50% off, but it only lasts for another 15 hours or so.

It is most definetly worth it.

there are also a few modern wannabe X-Coms that aren't horrible if you don't feel like fighting with dosbox and moslo to get old games running at a playable framerate (as opposed to ludicrous speed).

the UFO:After X series was good. (afterlight and aftermath - pretty sure there's a 3rd).

this is a link to a remake using one of the quake engines as well. it's enough to give you an idea of what the original x-com would be if you don't want to pretend like it's '96 again just yet. http://ufoai.sourceforge.net/

Terra Nova - Strike Force Centauri is another title that i think got unjustly overlooked. i think it suffered from the same problems as the original System Shock and Ultima:Underworld titles. they needed a really high end system when they first came out and were overshadowed by newer titles by the time most people had machines that could handle them.

Syndicate and Syndicate Wars are another pair of great old school titles, then again ANYTHING by Bullfrog games = AWESOME. speaking of which. DUNGEON KEEPER 2.

Hey thanks man. I'm installing it right now

I also got Osmos, cause it was one sale for 2$ and it looks interesting enough.

On real consoles, Dragon Age Origins. Everything Bioware touches is awesome! Yay!!!!

And to fulfill my retrogaming passions, I've downloaded a load of SNES classics - F-Zero and Super Castlevania IV have been on the waiting list for a while, but I can't BELIEVE that I forgot about Chrono Trigger until now!

Today I got 3 Gamecube games for 15 bucks, not a bad deal.

The games I got were:

Resident Evil 4
Harvest Moon: Magical Melody
Madden NFL 2002

I think this is without a doubt, the most random selection of games ever.

Anyway, I gave Resident Evil 4 a spin and holy sh*t, what were people smoking when they said this lacked the horror feel of the previous games? It dosen't. So far it has the same horror feel as previous games.

Sure it's more action oriented and it's more generous with ammo and check points, but it's still at it's core a survival horror game, there's always this feeling of creeping doom as you never know what's gonna jump out at ya.

So far it's been a total blast, I know some people hate the quick time events but I actually enjoy them because they bring about a sense of urgency. The grungy visual style combined with the tense music totally adds to the atmosphere, it succeeds admirably at capturing that horror movie feel.

So I'm already madly in love with this game. I'm probably gonna be hooked on it for a while. Also, I had no idea this was two discs, just how big is this game?

I always just felt 4 was wayyyy too easy compared to the other ones, which of course added more atmosphere than **** jumping out at you in my opinion.

Eventually it just becomes a big meh on the horror side of things.

It shouldn't take you that long to finish, 20 hours if you take things at a leisurely pace.

Maybe that's because your character dosen't control like he's hooked up to a grid?

I'm playing normal mode, but I wouldn't call it easy, I still find myself running out of ammo quickly when I'm up against something serious, managing your intentory adds quite a strategic element to the game, sometimes I trade out a weapon only to find out that it would come to great use latter on.

I'ts not brutally hard, but, I can't think of many modern games that are.

You can argue that having more ammo and checkpoints makes it easier, but the obstacles have been increased and if a game like this had scarce checkpoints and gave you nothing but a handgun it would be absolutely sadistic, games these days have cinematics, so one great thing about them is that you dont see so many of the same cinematics repeat over and over and over.

In other words scarce checkpoints would totally ruin the flow of this game.

Really? I find it to be genuinely scary, sure Leon is a badass and it might have added to the atmosphere better to play as someone like Jill, but hey, franchises have to evolve and if Capcom wanted to make the series more palatable for western gamers then I'm fine with that. While it does do away with a few of the survival horror elements, I don't think it conforms to being a generic action game either. It's a perfect blend of horror and action.

Still, I guess I can understand why survival horror purists might hate it.

Jesus, I missed out on a lot.

Since when was 20 hours "short"?.

I'm used to playing games where anything more than an hour is incredibly long. So I think that's quite a long time for me, I rarely ever try to beat a game like this in one setting. A 3 hour session is about as long as I ever get before wanting to turn the game off.

Seriously, who is gonna try and beat a game with 20 hours worth of gameplay in one day? I'm not that lame.

*Very leisurely pace 13-15 hours if you move at a decent rate

It depends, it might have been because I am used to those sorts of games, but I just found it a bit easy overall. But yeah, thats different from person to person.

How far in are you out of interest?

On the scary comment, sure there are bits that jump out, but I didn't have a forboding sense from JUST walking down a road like I did in Silent Hill 2 for example.
