When I first started this game I was in 7th grade with a 28k modem. I made a character and got dropped in the world with 100 gold, a pickaxe, and some clothing after picking a premade character template. I had no friends and there wasnt even a quest to tell you what to do. It's always been "heres a world figure it out".
This server has a custom map which is infinitely more detailed and well done than the original and a lot of custom systems. The modern day UO is much different from how the game started but the most popular servers all consist of the this era of the game. Modern UO has a completely different item system with random stats like Diablo and I think it would be a lot more overwhelming to get started with. Either way, it's completely free! There are still text commands like a MUD.. "Vendor Buy", "Guards", "Bank" etc..

Ooooo MUD text commands. Neat. This sounds like a game I can play and feel secretly superior to everyone at work talking about console games and they'll never quite be able to put their finger on why it annoys them to talk about gaming with me.

Yup, if you go out farming with pets as a tamer you'll be saying a lot of.. X Stay, X Kill, X Patrol, X Guard Me commands to make them fight, but you can make hotkeys so you dont have to type it over and over.
Here's a stupid video I recently recorded showing someone how to navigate past the traps in Darkmire Temple (aka the Indiana Jones dungeon).

400 players in 1 dungeon with a GM roleplaying an expedition leader guiding us along and blowing up walls to access the new areas. Was a good event, but i wont be farming there for a few weeks because i know its going to be packed and full of murderers.
Modern MMORPGs and game design theories can fuck right off.
