I figured if the game was popular enough to inspire people to buy it twice for a FPS mode, it must have something going for it. Yeah, it's an addictive game.

Anyone play Dark Souls II? I bought it because I heard it was hard as **** and I really enjoy a challenging game. However, this hasn't been fun challenging. This has just been dumb challenging. Your character can't move very quickly and almost everything can kill you in 1 or 2 hits. Now, if the moves were there and the game was challenging because it requires super hand eye coordination, that's one thing. But it seems winning a boss battle in this game is based on sheer luck and patience. That's just dumb. Am I missing something?
You have to unlearn A LOT of modern gaming quirks in order to get good at the Dark Souls games. I can't speak for Dark Souls II because I haven't played it yet, but as someone who put about 80 hours over the last month or so in the first, I can say with some authority that it's a game that reward patience. You have to learn how to time your attacks, when to block, when to dodge, when to parry and riposte, etc. You need to learn you enemy attack patterns and adjust your play style accordingly. I can also say that if you stick with it, the feeling of elation when you win is so overwhelming that it more than makes up for the frustration that was every point before that.

I will also say that there's no shame in looking up a basic tutorial, because yeah, the game doesn't explain half the content or what to do which is something that we've grown so accustomed to over the last decade in gaming, that it is rather jarring when it's inexplicably removed.

Stick with it though, I've nearly beaten Dark Souls and I can say without a doubt that it is quite possibly the greatest RPG I have ever played.

TLDR - Not for sissy gamers that want everything handed to them.

It really amazes me how much people who suck at video games have ruined them for the more serious gamers. While I understand why companies want to cater to casual gamers, it just annoys the hell out of me how much some content has been dumbed down over the years.

If being a sissy gamer means that you expect to be told how to play the game (as in the controls), than I'm a sissy gamer too.

@duga totally agree with you bro. Dark Souls II is cheap as hell.

Well, this kind of makes me want to give it another shot. The game has received so much praise that I knew there had to be something to it.

I mentioned in my earlier post that I definitely like a challenging game. There are times when I want to mindlessly kill stuff...that's when I reach for Diablo 3 or a shooter. There are times when I want to seriously use my brain (back in the day, I'd reach for Myst). Or for strategy, an old school Final Fantasy. There are times when I want my hand-eye coordination challenged...which is why I grabbed Dark Souls II.

I agree that casual gamers have sucked most of the challenge from games, but I still appreciate some kind of tutorial to get me on track. For a game that prides itself on being insanely difficult, a little help in the beginning would have been appreciated. There is a very short tutorial stage to get the basics down, but honestly it didn't help at all. And they included giant beasts that took me out 10 seconds after I booted up the game. I guess I should have seen that coming.

Did you play it? How far did you get?

Also, I see you live in Arkansas...I just got out of there. Whereabouts? Little Rock?

Basic controls sure, but if your too lazy to try button combinations in a combat game to figure out "secret moves" than yes you're a sissy gamer. There was no information about the secret moves in Castlevania: SoN, I figured them out by playing. Do you want every single combo handed to you in SF, Tekken, and MK also?

Back in the day, I would have no problems spending hours just figuring out the special moves. I'm too old for that **** now...just give me a sheet laying them all out for me. The skill is in execution, not how much time you are willing to spend mashing the buttons to figure a move out.

Once you get a hang on the combat, you can start to appreciate the other parts of the game, particularly the art and level design which is just amazing. Dark Souls has a sprawling map that is so beautifully interconnected that you just really have to give the designers credit for how they put the world together. The scenery also tells the story, but only enough that you're always intrigued and you always want to move forward to see more of it. In a lot of ways the game reminds me of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarania of Time, where if you can see it, you will most likely visit it at some point, and there will be a giant monster for you to kill.

But don't despair, everyone is horrible at the game when you start, and in some ways they still are. I can fuck up and lose half my health in the early areas of the game still, despite being so high level and having weapons that deal massive amounts of damage, and that's the beauty of the game, it gives you just enough to keep going, but never enough to become cocky. But when you get into the groove and become a death god among the undead, you really feel like a badass. When you can take down a boss who has killed you 6 times in a row without taking any damage, you feel like a badass... and then you're quickly killed for your hubris.

I need to get into the game, but I was discouraged early on when I faced the first boss. I was on that little platform above him where you start out, and I was trying to remember what the falling attack was, assuming of course that I would have time to ponder, when the boss jumped up, destroyed the platform, took most of my health, dropped me to the ground where I took five minutes to get up, and of course I was killed halfway to my feet. I realized then that I was not currently in the mindset to deal with this crap, so I played something else.

If you're playing on Xbox the control is RB but you sometimes have to do a quick run in order to land it. I've played through the beginning of Dark Souls probably 8-10 times now and I think I've successfully landed a drop attack 4, at least on the Asylum Demon.

Also, weirdly synchronous with today's discussion:

That was pretty helpful, actually...and I didn't even think of the difficulty in that way. Pretty ingenious.
