They weren't at all scary, but I just love third-person shooters. FPS games just have two-dimensional gameplay, dumbed down for the casual gamers, that gets old after about a half-hour (even the good ones), but third-person FPS usually have something else going for them, other than the shooting part: Tomb Raider is also a platformer, Mass Effect's power's and intricate conversation system, and the newer RE games make gameplay intentionally more challenging by limiting ammunition and making the shooting mechanics so that you can't just be a one man killing machine (Yeah, I know that's a staple of the series, but it still works in the newer games).

I'd play 5 and 6 over pretty much any non-Fallout FPS I can thin of, and Fallout has its own reasons for being more than just an FPS, so it doesn't count as far as I'm concerned.
The first Resident Evil series games 0, 1, 2, 3, CV are the five classics and that's the order to play them in as well. Are what I call true survival horrors and were creepy as you'd expect, with a great storyline, good characters, great game engine, puzzles and rationing your ammo etc and a great atmosphere especially for Racoon City. On 4 which is actually the 6th game in the chronological series they changed it into a more arcade shooter and it was a great game but that led to 5 and then onto 6. Admittedly Resident 6 is a good game as it's kind of a homage to all the previous Resident Evil games in terms of style.

If you're a real fanatic then there are the two Resident Evil Outbreak games set at the same time as Resident Evil 2 and 3 and imo good games as well. There are also the more recent Revelations' games which try to operate in the older survival style of the first lot of games, I was kind of disappointed with the first revelations game and the second has only recently just come out so haven't played that yet.

I wouldn't bother with all the Resident Evil shooter games as most are pretty bland.

I agree third person shooters are a lot more enduring than first person ones.

The story is needlessly complicated and there is some cringe-worthy voice acting, but if you were drawn to this from Resident Evil 4 (which I think a lot of people were), that shouldn't be a big issue for you as RE4's strong suits weren't its story or acting.

Like RE4, it does a great job building atmosphere and throwing a diverse set of creative enemies, bosses and locations at you. I think there may actually be a bit too much change in the environments to be honest; there is just so much packed in there.

Overall, really solid game. The frame rate looks a bit choppy sometimes, but all-in-all it's a great-looking game. It has some genuinely frightening moments as well.
Glad to see a good write up of the game, for example how does it compare to The Last of Us quality wise, as that's now kind of the new yardstick for survival horror games?

Completely different games. The Last of Us is very driven by its character development and story, whereas The Evil Within is driven by its gameplay and variety of enemies/locations. While I mentioned The Evil Within does a great job at creating atmosphere, The Last of Us does that better as well.

The Last of Us is a masterpiece of gaming though; definitely don't go in expecting something as good as that. While I don't think it's as good as Resident Evil 4 either, expect something more along the lines of that game, as they're both going for the same thing. Also, it is much more along the lines of Resident 4 than 5 or 6 because those two games really were just shooters with a false "survival horror" tag slapped on them. The Evil Within balances action with survival horror quite well, probably even better than Resident Evil 4.

It's absolutely beautiful in both its writing and its visuals. It's easily one of the prettiest looking games I've ever seen and has some amazing facial animations. What little of the combat I've played is absolutely visceral, where occasionally enemies will be sliced in half, heads fly off, and just all manner of satisfying swordsplay. They've fixed some of the really weird stuff like being able to steal things in plain view of guards and nobody giving a shit. Your health doesn't slowly regenerate over time so you really need to be careful about how you choose to approach combat, but that's always been kind of a Witcher thing, at least at first. The games have all had that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. problem where they start out really hard, but get easier as the game progresses. Finally the game runs like a champ, I've got a 970 and I can get a solid 60fps with v-sync on and everything turned up to ultra. The only thing I had to turn off was the nvidia hair physics thing because that tanked my framerate. It's a neat feature but it's far too demanding for what it is, I mean even people with 980's and Titan X's are reporting massive drops with it turned on.

Hopefully by the time you get it Nvidia will have fixed their new driver (assuming you're using that brand and not AMD) because the one I downloaded yesterday was shit. I was freezing every 10 or 15 minutes, either in the middle of conversations, in the middle of my inventory, or just out in the gameworld. I downloaded the driver that came out last month with GTA V and everything is working again with no trouble.

Just picked The Witcher 3 up. Just opening up the physical copy of the game (I got it for the PS4), I know it's going to be special. They packed the soundtrack, a brief history booklet and an awesome map in there, along with a game manual. Also, there was a "thank you" note saying they'd be providing 16 DLCs free of charge. Can't remember the last time I opened up a game that didn't just have a very brief manual attached. Nice touch.

See you guys next year.

Thing about these games is that it's pretty much up to you how long it is if you take side quests and exploration into account. It sounds like the side quests in this game are more diverse than Skyrim's, so you might get more out of this game overall than Skyrim. Skyrim has sort of a never-ending quest system built in though, which I'm not sure this game does. The Witcher 3's world is apparently 20% bigger than Skyrim's world though.

If you're just wondering about the main quest-line though, apparently the fastest speedruns of this game still took 25 hours. Seems a bit longer than Skyrim in that regard.

I don't think any serious game player avoids the side quests, but of course you need to be selective in them otherwise you'll never finish.
