I’ve been thinking about getting into some Swamp Thing material. I’ve heard there’s a lot of horror elements to his stories which intrigues me. I also heard his already-cancelled DC Universe show was good and horror-oriented. I’m into it

No wonder why Warner cancelled it.
(not being ironic, I mean it. Warner seems to avoid doing good stuff with their DC characters)

The Batlord 12-18-2019 05:11 PM

This is a panel from just after Jason Todd stole Batman's tires but before Batman took him in. He's definitely the coolest Robin.

Bedlam Ballroom 12-19-2019 05:59 AM

Maybe the coolest Robin but not the coolest sideckick, y'know.

The Batlord 12-19-2019 07:18 AM

I'm willing to bet Jason Todd never quit smoking or listening to Poison Idea though.

Bedlam Ballroom 12-19-2019 08:42 AM

Yep. Jason was so punk he had the punkest death in comics.

Black Francis 01-11-2020 07:11 AM

Is there any part in the Spiderman comics where Peter learns that he has to pull his punches and pretend to be punched? Realistically there has to have been an accidental murder or two in the process of learning his abilities.

The Batlord 02-28-2020 03:19 AM

Probably, but they couldn't show it cause they didn't allow black people in comics back then.

The Batlord 04-18-2020 07:19 PM

How the **** did I not know there was a Harley Quinn series? I mean it's a web series so it's not the same as a REAL series, but it's straight up rated R with constant profanity and blood and guts so it's completely different from literally any DC animated thing but how the **** did I not know about this?

Seriously this is my new thing even so don't talk to me for the next couple days cause this show bangs. I mean it's done by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm so you know it's at least good.

DwnWthVwls 04-19-2020 12:26 PM

That opening scene.. lol

I knew that voice was familiar.. Kaley Cuoco voice acts Harley and is also the Exec. Producer.

The Batlord 04-19-2020 08:55 PM

Yeah still loving this show. Fav line of the last five minutes:

Joker: Fine, I'll bake the ****ing cake.

In "A Scandal in Bohemia" Sherlock Holmes tricks Irene Adler into revealing her most prized possession were she to flee her home if it were on fire. I now have such a possession.

The Batlord 04-26-2020 03:59 PM

DC animated movies are almost as much my **** as the MCU movies and having Under the Red Hood on Blu-Ray is like touching myself. Second best Batman movie after The Dark Knight (except for maybe Mask of the Phantasm which I don't remember well enough but which might simply be the best Batman movie) and definitely the best for pure action scenes.

So here's my latest haul all on Blu-Ray.

Missed HQ series at first as well, but I'm liking this more each episode. Enjoy!

So have you heard about the Sensational She-Hulk omnibus that's coming out in November? Or do you already own all that **** so who cares?

BTW there are deluxe hardcover editions of Berserk manga now that are 7"x10" (basically the size of a Western comic book). They're forty bucks but contain three volumes of the normal manga which is actually a good deal as they would be $15 each and in paperback. So you can't even complain about small page size anymore.

https://www.amazon.com/Berserk-Delux...xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

DwnWthVwls 05-08-2020 04:30 PM

I know.. they had them when I bought the first book to try them out. I may buy one and give it another go but im balls deep in Sanderson cosmere atm..

I just ordered warbreaker, elantris, arcanum unbound, and the 3 extra mistborn books.

The Batlord 05-08-2020 04:33 PM

OMG they're also doing the same thing for Hellsing! My other great manga love. And there's only ten volumes of it so it wouldn't be as bottomless a money pit. Oh so tempting.

https://www.amazon.com/Hellsing-Delu...s=books&sr=1-9

DwnWthVwls 05-08-2020 04:37 PM

I wish they were drawn like the good parts of the Netflix movies.. the black and white manga style is not all that appealing to me.

The Batlord 05-08-2020 04:48 PM

Bro. Die. The art of the Berserk manga is one of its greatest strengths over any of the adaptations. You just have to get used to black and white, which isn't all that hard to get used to. I mean no matter how much time, money, or manpower they put into an animated series they are never going to be able to animate this level of detail. And tbh color in Western comics sort of precludes this level of detail as well. Black and white has its place and you need to learn some ****ing respect.

DwnWthVwls 05-08-2020 04:55 PM

I think that first example is pretty awful and the second is actually amazing. The style can just get muddy at times without good contrast and texture.

imagine those drawings with this coloring:

DwnWthVwls 05-08-2020 05:02 PM

Look what I found:

The colored image is orders of magnitude better than the black and white.

Meh. Notice where all the high detail stuff is there's monochromatic coloring, and where ever there is color variance it's clearly computerized shading. If the art showed stuff that would need different and distinct coloring among all that detail not only would it vastly increase the time necessary to color it the coloring would probably end up looking very busy and garish and so you would need to dial down the detail.

And also the artwork itself is far jankier. With all that detail you'd expect more exactness in linework and yet there is plenty of squigglieness and lack of symmetry that I would put down probably to lack of time than any kind of artistic statement. The blessing and curse of Berserk is that it's released whenever Kentaro Miura decides to release a new chapter, which means long delays but artwork of the utmost exactitude.

Oh Jesus ****ing Christ that's ugly. Not only is the coloring bland and uninspired as **** but it obscures the linework like squinting at the sun obscures the sky, defeating the purpose of drawing all that detail in the first place. You have zero taste.

DwnWthVwls 05-08-2020 05:35 PM

You dont even like onions.. **** off about taste.

The Batlord 05-08-2020 05:37 PM

I don't dislike onions because of taste. I dislike them because they feel awful to chew.

The Batlord 05-19-2020 02:53 PM

How dare you, DC? How dare you release this when my Trump bucks are running on fumes and I'm trying to reign in my spending? How dare you tempt me with this mana from heaven when you've in the past resigned your classic comic runs to obscurity while Marvel releases everything that ever sold more than ten issues in sumptuous omnibuses? Jesus give me guidance.

Pretty ****ing fantastic Superman story with some great Lex Luthor action (he's seriously comics' greatest *******, and I'm including J. Jonah Jameson). It's yet another interpretation of Superman's origin story but well worth your time. It's kinda hard to get tired of Superman origin stories tbh. I was super bummed when I looked up to see if the writer, Mark Waid, had used this series to start an actual monthly run with the character but alas, no.

https://laistassets.scprdev.org/i/f4...38c0-eight.jpg

DwnWthVwls 05-29-2020 06:57 PM

Ive come to realize that super hero comics are just fan fiction that people dont think is lame.. It'd be a lot cooler if there was just one story, and if people wanted to make their own story they made their own characters.

The Batlord 05-29-2020 07:05 PM

Well duh it's fanfiction. The sort of idea that it's one continuous story is a misnomer. Any series of any character of any length is going to basically be broken down into runs by specific creative teams where you'd be better off reading each run as a self-contained piece of work featuring that character rather than as an actual chronology of that character. The point is in the suspension of disbelief where you accept this but still accept the greater continuity of the character and the universe as a whole. You just have to choose how you perceive that universe. It's by far and away not a perfect system but without it Superman would have ended decades ago and Superman: Birthright wouldn't exist and the world would be sadder for it.

DwnWthVwls 05-29-2020 07:17 PM

I never really thought about it before, but thats what I dont like. I think this is why I prefer things like Saga/Fables.

Do they still make conituations of the original storylines or is it all fanfic style?

That's a perfectly valid approach. If all we had was soap opera style long running series I'm sure I'd be begging for more self-contained stories. But not every writer necessarily has a great original concept in them, or not every idea they might have that could be applied to a long running series needs to be an original concept. And some writers might just have stories for long running series that they just really want to make. I mean there's nothing wrong with fanfiction. It's just that it has a bad reputation because it's generally associated with amateurs.

Quote:

Sure. It might not be exactly what you're looking for or expecting and most writers probably aren't walking encyclopedias of continuity but some writers absolutely do expand on old stories.

I mean Grant Morrison's Batman heavily features Damian Wayne as a new Robin who is the child of Bruce Wayne and Talia al Ghul, daughter of R'as al Ghul. Damian is a character who featured in like one panel in exactly one story from 1987 almost 20 years earlier where Batman and Talia got married for like a week before the whole thing fell through and Talia gave birth to a child who was given up for adoption at the end of the comic and never mentioned again until Grant Morrison started writing for Batman and ran with the ****ing idea.

Or Under the Red Hood where in the 80s there was a second Robin after Dick Grayson gave up being Robin to become Nightwing but the second Robin was murdered by the Joker but twenty years later they brought back that Robin as a Punisher style vigilante trying to prove that he was a better Batman than Batman

Or just look at how Jean Grey's death in the Dark Pheonix Saga has been upended countless times in the comics in a cycle that continues to this day.

Superhero comics are always recycling old story lines in new ways. It's part of the medium.
