And please look up the massive cluster**** that is Crisis on Infinite Earths. If DC ever manages to get a movie universe off the ground that people actually watch I'm sure it will end up being their Infinity War/Endgame. Probably the single most famous comic storyline in history at least for nerds and it's all about decades of continuity coming to a head.

Miracleman is way nuttier than Watchmen is. After he left the book and Neil ****ing Gaiman took over it almost got even crazier.

Holy ****, Superman: American Alien is my new favorite thing. Another look at Superman's origins but with each issue being a snippet of one time period that was important to Clark Kent's life. And just read this **** cause it kills me. Clark winds up on Bruce Wayne's yacht who is currently still training to be Batman and no one has seen him for 12 years but somehow he still throws birthday parties that he does not attend.




My favorite part is that that girl he's with is a pre-furry Cheetah of Wonder Woman villain fame. So Superman ****ed Cheetah. Did a durn good job too apparently.

Yeah at first seeing that Clark and Lex knew each other as kids like the Smallville TV show that was going on at the time I rolled my eyes but how it was used hit me real good in the feels. I've been Clark and I've been Lex and I'm still Clark and Lex but mostly Lex.

You know you felt it hard when Clark was talking about people in town looking at Lex like he was an alien.

So did you ever read Miracleman? I've been badgering these ignorant ****s on this site for years to read it and NO ONE has taken me up on it. You want the ultimate superhero deconstruction done perfectly the very first time, Miracleman is it. Watchmen was basically Moore building on the ideas of Miracleman to deconstruct American comic book history and 2000th century American history into one literate atom bomb of commentary. And in Watchmen he really only touched on the pure superhero deconstructionism of Miracleman because he had explored it so thoroughly and so painfully in Miracleman that there wasn't anything left to explore without bringing those ideas to an even wider conceptual basis than he already had.

And Miracleman arguably did better what even Watchmen did on a conceptual level because Moore's conceptual reach on the former title was already so all-consuming. Watchmen is probably the better written and more sophisticated title, but Miracleman is pure and primal in a way that Watchmen is not.

God damn it, read Miracleman.

I honestly don't know who owns Miracleman. It was originally published by an obscure British company and its legal rights issues kept it out of print for decades until a few years ago. Which is why nobody but obsessives have ever read it.

Oh wait, I guess Marvel owns it. I do seem to remember hearing that the original publisher was a Marvel imprint.

You know Miracleman's weird publication history actually makes it the perfect storm of a superhero deconstruction. Miracleman is called Miracleman because of copyright issues with Marvel Comics. Before that he was called Marvelman. Even while Moore was writing the series it was called Marvelman. And Marvelman was a character from the 50s/60s who Moore was reimagining who was a knockoff of the original Captain Marvel from the 40s who was a knockoff of Superman so blatant that DC sued and won and eventually obtained the rights to and renamed Shazam because by the time they had the rights Marvel Comics had created their own Captain Marvel and I guess a copyright infringement character doesn't have rights to their own name.

So Miracleman is essentially Superman, the basic concept of the superhero, but is also a second cousin knockoff with absolutely no originality to speak of to set him apart from the basic concept of the superhero idea. So a deconstructionist story about him is deconstructing the origin of the idea of the superhero while also having a cartoonish knockoff avatar to express everything that is ridiculous about the idea of the superhero even while the character is essentially an in-story god.

And then you meet Kid Miracleman, Miracelman's former sidekick in all corny ways of what a sidekick can be, and any ideas about friendly metaphors and dispassionately literate ideas go out the window because the most purely evil supervillain ever has upended any notion of this being some cutesy version of a prequel to the idea of deconstructing superheroes.

Oh my god I'm glad I'm rereading Miracleman.

The Ring of the Nibelung by P. Craig Russell is the best epic/fantasy comic ever made. The story of the famous opera on the hands of one of the best illustrators. A must for fans of the genre.

Yes. Yes to this. I often find myself wary of collecting reprinted versions of old school comics for exactly the reasons in this video. They might not even look the worst, and the bright colors can be neat, but it just never looks right. I sense a dark future ahead for me where I spend ungodly amounts of money on original issues of old school comics.

I need to get some of those Teen Titan collections that were reprinted on more old school paper and look like they're probably supposed to look. I think the Alan Moore Swamp Thing reprints might be the same.

I do have some of the physical issues but they're modern reprints and per the above post they're not really visually the way to see the series and I'm not actually willing to lend them out anyway. Any physical version of Miracleman is staying with me. It's too obscure and out of print a series for me to take any chances even with bland looking reprints.

Copped original issues of the four issue West Coast Avengers mini-series that got extended into a long running comic. $12 including shipping. I love eBay and am hype for B/C-list superhero nonsense.

You know I was wondering how they were going to proceed with Black Panther, Chadman Bosewick being dead, but then I saw a commercial with the guy who played Kilmonger being the new voice of Alexa and it hit me even before I knew what the commercial was even about that he was going to be the new Black Panther. He's being sold to the public now and the only reason I can think that he would be sold as anything is that Disney is now putting up millions in ad money to make him a household name so he can be Black Panther.

And now I'm sitting here wondering how they're going to rehabilitate his character's radical beliefs so that he's now totally cool with the white status quo.

I think you'd be all about Sandman. It's trippy, gothy, and while it's in the DC universe and is a reinvention of a superhero it's not a superhero comic if that matters to you. If you've ever seen American Gods or Coraline they're adaptations of the same writer's stuff. And it ****ing looks like this.

Saga is brilliant. You should also check anything by Alan Moore. He's heavily GOAT. Watchmen is obvious but Swamp Thing and Marvelman/Miracle Man are also god tier.

I read that entire Whedon series and a whole bunch of the famous Morrisson one, not the entire thing but I may finish it. While I'm reading them I have the usual 'oh god this is silly' feeling but those X-men comics stick with me. It's the outcast/found family trope I think.

Yeah Spawn sucks. It has its redeeming values but it's pure 90s trash. Sandman is vaguely like Spawn but a million times better. If you want the best version of Spawn then ditch the comic and watch the cartoon. It's objectively better.

Yeah that's what X-Men is. Superhero team comic books generally have worse interpersonal drama but are wilder and crazier than solo books because all the characters are in their own solo books so the drama of the team book is limited but X-Men solves this by having its character's primary stories in the team book. It's so simple but legitimately why X-Men are on the same level as Spider-Man, Batman, and Superman.

Black Science was cool. The drawing ranged from fantastical worlds to indistinguishable messes. The storyline was trippy and an interesting take on the multiverse theory. Without spoiling much, the idea is that there are multiple universes that exist as part of an "everyverse", which can navigated layer by layer like an onion. The characters range from teenagery anarchists to conniving neoliberal fascists to egotistical brats and more in an everyverse of unsympathetic character arcs, which presents the story in a sort of removed way that allows the reader to walk away with their own interpretation.
