I really hope you're right when you say it's not like The Sopranos. I really never liked that show. But this one looks gripping.

Well, I got into it before the Sopranos, which I do like, but I can see the similarities. Both are at their heart about dysfunctional family units, whether in the case of the Sopranos it's the mafia, Sons of Anarchy the motorcycle club, or the various family units within and tied to them. Also, each deals with an organisation that breaks the law, and is not apologetic for it nor does it make excuses: this is just how it is.

But the storylines in S0A are brilliant, the characters excellent and I'd be really surprised if you didn't fall for it right away.

Currently waiting for season 4.... I'd do you a clip but I wouldn't want to spoil any of the twists the show has to offer.

I'm enjoying an anime called Mushi-Shi right now. The only character that is there from episode to episode is Ginko, a traveling "Mushi master" who helps various people using the ancient science of Mushi study.

The Mushi are called "life in its purest essence," essentially beings that are not flora or fauna, but something else, and very much alive. They are pretty much explained as the true cause whenever people experience almost any mysterious illness or issue. They are kind of analogous to ghosts, in a way, since they are material or immaterial at will, but the majority of them are not sentient and aren't trying to cause any true harm, they're just surviving. The intelligent ones strongly remind me of contemporary portrayals of European Fae (or Fairy, if you prefer), supernatural beings that are neither good nor evil, and don't even understand human morals.

I'm only a few episodes in but it's pretty enjoyable right now, but definitely not something to watch if you're looking for fun. It's brooding, quiet, slow, and contemplative. The main character has not fought anything yet, just given medicine, discussed issues with people, and silently thought. The minimalistic soundtrack is mostly based on Japanese folk music, and really helps the show get you into an introspective mindset. Would recommend it to anyone, watch it on Netflix.

Word of warning for the squeamish, though. Even though it's slow, quiet, calm, etc, it has some... disquieting moments. A few scenes make you squirm either out of creepiness or disgust. As an example, here's a screenshot from the second episode. If you can handle this picture without any explanation, you're good. If it makes you physically ill, stay away.

Just got to watch the first episode of new "Red Dwarf", and while it didn't blow me away it didn't completely suck either. High praise, I know, but there's been a bad taste in my mouth about RD since "Back to Earth". I really hope they get it right this time around; last thing I want is for the guys to be brought out of retirement and make a so-so show. I'd rather remember it as it was.

Good signs though, good signs. Didn't laugh uproariously (hardly at all really) but good to see the guys back together, and it doesn't really look like thirteen years have passed since they last, properly, were together.

For those of you who may not have access to Dave, here's the first episode in full...

I thought it was great.

I thought Back to Earth was good too. It had its flaws, splitting it into three parts hurt it because the first part alone was rubbish, and it didnt feel much like Red Dwarf but I thought it was alright and that it got too much stick.

The new episode, however, felt a lot like the older episodes and apart from the obvious ageing of the cast I felt it wouldnt have been out of place in the earlier series. A great job and I just hope the rest of Red Dwarf X is as good.

Oh it was good, just after so long I kind of hoped it would open with more of a bang, more laughs, more weird stuff. Good to see Cat gettimg some decent screentime and lines: he was criminally underused in the last few seasons (certainly 7 anyway) and always a treat to see Rimmer. Like the "reveal" about his brother too.

One thing though: why no computer? No Holly, no Hilly. Hell, I'd have taken Queeg or even Gordon! Just seemed a little missing. But a good start, just not what I would term a GREAT start. Definitely looking forward to more though.

But I really didn't like BtE: felt it lost its way about halfway through.
