Favorite Old School cartoons?

Lame thread topic, but it's late and there's not much else to do.

Old school cartoons for my era are stuff from the 90's like "Doug", "Angry Beavers", and "Hey Arnold"

I'm curious as to see what you guys watched growing up.

Freebase Dali 09-25-2009 10:15 PM

This may get moved to the Media forum, but:

I grew up with X-Men, TMNT, etc...
But I do love some of the later stuff.

The shows I listed are those I think have held up the best over time.

Other shows like Captain Panet, Captan N, Super Maio Bros Super Show are shows I loved as a kid but are just laughably awful when I try to watch them now.

I could never watch Captain N when eating though, because the very sight of Mother Brain made me ill. That bitch was ugly.

http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/0...rain_super.jpg

Anyway, I only listed the shows from my early childhood (before my teens).

Hey Arnold was a good show. But that was around the time when I grew out of the Nick phase. I enjoyed watching it, but it was one of those shows that always had a message, which annoyed me even when I was a kid. Arnold kinda came across as a self righteous assh*le sometimes.

I gotta give props to Invader Zim though, one of the most brilliantly twisted and imaginative kids cartoons ever made, and it died way before it's time.

The fact that they canceled such an awesome show so they could keep showing that piece of sh*t Rocket Power is still something I haven't gotten over completely.

Terrible Lizard 09-26-2009 01:44 AM

Rocko's Modern Life
Aaaah Real Monsters
Hey Arnold
Cow and Chicken
Old Hannah and Barbera ****.
Toonami
The Ripping Friends
Not a cartoon: Are you afraid of the dark?

boo boo 09-26-2009 01:51 AM

I forgot about Aaaah Real Monsters, awesome show. Though I didn't like it as much as the other old school nicktoons because I found it to be a bit too gross, which as a Ren & Stimpy fan, is really saying something.

yeah, network execs aren't exactly the best at seeing artistic vision

what still pisses me off to this day is how Cartoon Network canceled Megas XLR after only two seasons

boo boo 09-26-2009 01:59 AM

What pissed me off more than anything as a kid was when they canceled the saturday morning Sonic cartoon, the one where Robotnik was an evil, badass dictator instead of a functionally retarded person. Unlike the weekly show most people remember (the one with Scratch and Grounder and the Sonic Sez segments that will forever be immortalized in youtube poop) this one actully had a storyline, and a pretty damn good one for a kids show. Also it had the coolest intro of any kids show ever.

The last episode ended on a huge cliffhanger for the third season, which never came and pissed me off to no end.

I think it was canceled because it couldn't compete with Power Rangers, so naturally ABC replaced it with something that could... a f*cking Free Willy cartoon that nobody liked. F*cking idiots.

~LK~ 09-26-2009 06:29 AM

Hey Arnold! was the sh*t. Doug was cool too. Rugrats was cool as well, but that All Grown Up crap was a disaster. Rocket Power was cool sometimes as well. Then there's Bobby's World. I watched that show every morning before school as a kid.

Janszoon 09-26-2009 06:37 AM

Thank you all for making me feel extremely old. :p: I watched stuff like Superfriends and Fat Albert growing up. You gotta love Aquaman surfing on the dolphins in this clip:

For me Rugrats died when they introduced Dill, but it got even worse when they added that asian baby and that babysitter voiced by Amanda Bynes. But yeah, All Grown Up was the final nail in the coffin. They took a great kids show and raped it to death.

~LK~ 09-26-2009 06:52 AM

Early Spongebob is also great. But the later episodes that have come out in the last two years or so, maybe longer, well they've all sucked. Spongebob is just annoying now.

NumberNineDream 09-26-2009 07:05 AM

Tom&Jerry
Pokemon
a lot of overdubbed Anime
and last but not least ...
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!!

Mr Sensitive 09-26-2009 07:26 AM

Not really cancelled. Krstic wanted to end the series so he could work on other projects, and I think the ending that we got is decent.

WolfAtTheDoor 10-04-2009 06:22 PM

Courage the Cowardly Dog, Ed Edd n Eddy, Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Dragonball Z, Batman Animated Series, and even though not necessarily a cartoon, the CGI Starship Troopers series.

All staples of my childhood.

I was watching it on youtube recently for old times sake. I'm surprised they ever let it go on air.

And, to add a few more than I had previously forgotten about, cow & chicken, dexter's laboratory, 101 dalmations cartoon and the buzz lightyear cartoon, though I can't for the life of me remember what it was called...

Flower Child 10-05-2009 06:38 PM

I was digging around the other day, and came across this great set of classic Bugs Bunny cartoons, Merrie Melodies. Very clever cartoons. Made me laugh out loud quite a few times.
http://frederatorblogs.com/refredera...ssing-hare.jpg

Tom & Jerry never fails to make me laugh either.
"Texas Tom" is excellent. Love how he smokes his whole cigarette in one puff. Makes me laugh so hard.

Man, I miss the political incorrectness of old cartoons.

Warner Bros and Tex Avery were especially guilty, but not even Disney was as squeaky clean as some people remember.

Most people think of Mickey Mouse as being a real goodie two shoes compared to Bugs Bunny, but when you look at some of his old cartoons, you realise just how much of an assh*le this guy really was.

He has quite a reputation for committing horrific acts of animal abuse and reckless endangerment, as well as enough reported cases of sexual harassment that should earn him a place in the national registry of sex offenders.

Here's a good example of him doing all of these things.

Attempted rape @ 4:20

Liljagare 10-08-2009 03:49 AM

I'll go with these

Voltron
He-man and the Masters of the Universe
GI Joe
Transformers
Wildfire
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Thundercats
Jem
Sheera, Princess of Power
Pirates of Darkwater
Daria
Beavis and Butthead

and the infamous Pinky and the Brain :)

^I have the feeling that this episode will be now rated PG15 because there's someone smoking on TV.

Anyone watched the new Tom & Jerry [ for kids aged +3] ? They chase each other very briefly, they don't hit each other and in most of the scenes they talk :yikes:

What's the use of a politically correct Tom & Jerry -_-

boo boo 10-08-2009 06:07 AM

Anyone remember the Tom and Jerry movie?

No? Let's keep it that way.

Haha, still remember the theme song as well! Who could forget it?

Animaniacs, not so much unfortunately.

Arya Stark 10-08-2009 07:48 AM

As soon as you said that, the theme song popped up in my head. What a fail.

I remember watching Animaniacs, but I forgot everything about them. I used to watch Pinky and the Brain religiously too :D

Pinky: "Gee Brain, what do you want to do tonight?"
The Brain: "The same thing we do every night, Pinky—try to take over the world!"

WolfAtTheDoor 10-08-2009 08:02 AM

Animaniacs was an outstanding show. I also sort of remember 'Street Sharks', which was kind of cool.

boo boo 10-08-2009 08:27 AM

Dude animaniacs was awesome. Not just for pinky and the brain either.

Compared to other kids shows at the time it was an overall well writen and hilarious cartoon.
