Shark week

Is there a thread about this already?
I know it's almost over but it's honestly one of my favorite weeks and I want someone to watch Sharkpocalypse and play the Shark week drinking game and love shark week with me.

#2 would be quite difficult for me....

I didn't even know it was Shark Week or that it existed, but my best friend is coming over tomorrow night to get drunk and watch Sharknado.

I absolutely love Shark Week!

This year it was a little weak for me though, since it was SO strongly based on people getting attacked and all of that jazz. It just wasn't my thing. I like learning about the actual animals. Not watching the people watching the animals... ;P

That's really awesome Arya! I really like watching documentaries about animals and I may just take part in this Shark Week. How did Shark Week start?

I have no idea! I can look up some articles and see what I find. :D

it started in the late 80s on Discovery as a way to promote shark awareness and protection....according to their website it is the longest running annual tv event in history

i have to agree that this year is a little lacking but interesting all the same

the fake documentary about the Megalodon was just stupid.....but somewhat entertaining in a "this is so bad its funny" kind of way

the top 10 was interesting considering the Great White was knocked down a notch by the bull shark and when they were talking about the Mako...they brought up a great point.....basically due to climate and ocean temperature change....should this very intelligent and VERY fast shark start being able to swim in shallow waters....we are in for many more attacks and deaths

^he is a cute one though.....and as far as i know the only shark that has shown scientist problem solving ability....very scary :)

i also really enjoyed the comparison of great white attacks to human serial killers....that one was very interesting and i'll be watching the news next year to see if the rouge shark returns to the same beach on the same day and kills a third person

I was obviously missing all of the good programs this year!
I saw the program where they were following sharks to their mating grounds, which involved way too much rough activity towards the sharks for me.

I also saw the extremely boring program where they connect the "Shark Cam" to the shark but it's far too green to see anything anyway!

A fun program I saw was one with two "Shark Experts" who basically were trying to figure out why Sharks were moving in on us and why sharks not expected to attack, were beginning to. It was called "Sharkpocalypse" did you see that one? They were also funny, which I appreciated.

Others I saw were more related to being attacked by sharks, surviving sharks, stuff like that. I apparently missed some really great stuff.

My sister thought Megaladon was hilarious and was showing me pictures on the internet and stuff of this so-called creature. A lot of people believed it, but I was more upset that the mermaid program on AnimalPlanet was a mockumentary. I wanted so badly for the videos to be real!

I obviously didn't believe the one with the two kids though... that's a different conversation entirely.

Anyway, I loved Shark Week all the same and I thank you for you research on its beginning, I'm sure Vanilla will too!

I had no idea it was that old. The first I remember hearing of it was sometime in the early 00s.
