There were some good lines for sure, no denying that. The majority of the special rested on attempts at being offensive without much of a joke behind them, which just winds up being boring imo.

Ok, how did you feel about the OJ special?

Name a special that is more provocative in 2019 on Netflix.

jwb 09-02-2019 12:45 PM

He did a sketch on Chappelle defending Michael Jackson that was in the same brand of humor. His humor hasn't really changed. You have.

I wasn't even aware that he was doing standup, I'll look into it.

Idk, I haven't watched many. You were offended by the new Chappelle special?

Same brand of humour=/=same quality of humour.

jwb 09-02-2019 12:53 PM

It's not any criticism. It's your specific criticism seems that way. Like saying that he's just trying to be offensive is the same criticism Chappelle show got. So where's the disconnect? I could understand if it is just not your style of comedy, but if it is and the minute he starts staying things that go against your politics it's suddenly not funny... Yeah I'm thinking it got spoiled by your PC filter.

You don't seem like much of a comedy fan. I might be wasting my time.

but point taken that timing does matter to a degree, the bit is stale at this point, evolve your act

No his act is extremely important right now. Because people want to destroy that brand of humor. You're not supposed to punch down. That's why Dave was so in your face about it this time cause last time he got some flack for very mild tranny jokes. So this was a guy with f*ck-you money saying let me joke about whatever I want to joke about.

Nah you're definitely on some reactionary ad hominem strawman business. Stanhope has a similar brand of humour that he backs up with genuinely funny jokes. I think your ability to interpret criticism on this subject has been spoiled by your anti-PC filter.

There's absolutely no shortage of this but sure, his mediocre special is important.

Frownland 09-02-2019 01:14 PM

I only watched about 40 minutes because I was underwhelmed, is the last 20 minutes some God tier that I missed out on?

If you didn't laugh at his Chinese face you honestly have no soul tbh

Ranked from highest to lowest quality: Norm MacDonald, Stanhope, Daniel Tosh, that English dude with racy zingers, Joe Rogan and Sam Hyde

jwb 09-02-2019 01:45 PM

Really?

Sam Hyde is a fringe example who's show was cancelled over this sort of horse ****. And he's not even a big name in stand up.

And I don't watch Rogan's stand up cause I don't like his delivery but what I have seen isn't any where near as edgy as Dave.

Frownland 09-02-2019 01:51 PM

Yes, all of those people are in the same brand of comedy as Chappelle.

eh it goes back to Lenny Bruce but the definition of what is PC changes.

I'm not saying it's a new angle. I'm saying it's an important angle that has always existed and right now Dave is the modern day champion.

It's important for those of us who enjoy it. We don't want our toys taken away. Go piss on some other parade you malcontent.

Comedy has historically been a home for a lot of free speech issues and discussions of what is and isn't taboo, so it makes sense in a way. It's oft overstated though, like how people thinking that protesting Chik-fil-a puts them on the same level as civil rights protesters in the 60s.

It was Louis before he died and he was actually funny.

jwb 09-02-2019 02:07 PM

I'm not saying it's important for you. I'm saying it's important for people who enjoy edgy comedy.

I enjoy it too but I prefer when it's a lot funnier than what Chappelle put out which is why I'm so hard on him. Nomsayin?

Louis pandered to the left a lot. I love Louis and I hope he resurrected but he knew how to set a tone liberal white people would be comfortable with.

Cause I don't know what you're saying.

jwb 09-02-2019 02:14 PM

Let's see some of this edginess from Jimmy Carr

Dave Chappelle is pandering to the anti-PC crowd (though I think he's laughing at their predictability just as much as he is at the PC crowd), does that invalidate his championship?

Offensive material used as a vehicle for something genuinely funny>>>>shock humour on its own

Frownland 09-02-2019 02:17 PM

Jimmy Carr is the English dude I was thinking of.

Steve Hughes is pretty good too.

If you open up podcasting as a new brand of standup (which I think is valid), edgy comedy is abound. It's really not under threat.

jwb 09-02-2019 02:21 PM

Nah cause the anti pc crowd (comedy fans) don't get you canceled.

And the last point is semantics. I thought there were genuinely funny lines in his special.

jwb 09-02-2019 02:22 PM

I'm still waiting for a clip. Just 1.

Who got Carlin cancelled?

Gatekeeping comedy is a PC crowd move btw

There were some but I also thought that the majority of the special was pretty bland. Idk, I think I've been too desensitized by 14 year olds in YouTube comment sections to be able to appreciate offensiveness with little genuine joke structure supporting it.

What is your point? Not everyone who was edgy got cancelled?

with Chappelle it's offer his cadence and delivery that makes it funny.

Like I could read the line "if I was gonna rape a kid, macaulay culkin would be one of the first.." and it's not funny. But with his delivery it is.

That's your point based on your response to Louis being an edgy comedian.

Agree to disagree I guess. I could tell by his delivery that it was a joke, but it didn't sell the joke for me. I dislike Trevor Noah for the same reason: he's all delivery and no substance (he's been improving based on clips I've seen though).

Then the new Chappelle special isn't edgy.

we'll have to agree to disagree cause Trevor Noah's delivery sucks

I agree, the point was that he relies on his delivery over content.

jwb 09-02-2019 03:14 PM

Bill Maher isn't and never was funny.

right I just had no idea he was doing that cause his delivery is very bland.i thought he was more riding the wave of semiwoke Politics. His stand up is just preachy and attracts people who want to Pat themselves on the back.

Where as Chappelle is primal. He's making Chinese faces. He's buying guns to protect his property from heroine addicted whites. He's actually being funny. Not witty, not insightful, funny.
