Diary of an Indie Kid

I wanted to start a blog with this idea, but figured i'd try it out with you guys to see if it was any good first. Not neccasarily about music directly, so feel free to move this to the lounge if neccasary. There will be some reviews, there will be some not-reviews. That's the best introduction I can give, just go with it.

DAY 1: REVELATION

Setting: Highschool Cafeteria

It was a few days before Halloween, I was eating lunch with a few of my friends, I had pizza like I do everyday, which probably contributes to the unbearable amount of acne that regularly makes a home all over my face. After angering and/or amusing my tablemates with my witty take on current events, religion, women, and the latest music craze, it came time to make a very important decision. We were debating what to do on 31st, would we go to a party? Go trick-or-treating? Just stay in, play Halo, and listen to mc chris all night? Even though the latter was what ended up happening, at the time we all wanted to dress up that was for sure. Group costume ideas that were thrown out: Pokemon, Rocky, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Yu-Gi-Oh. We came to a conclusion: Indie kids. We spent the rest of our lunch period laughing at indie stereotypes. Next block, in my history class, I got thinking about what I could do to really go all out with this costume. Then it hit me. I worriedly looked down at my faux-flannel shirt, tight pants, and iPod playing 'Crown of Love' by Arcade Fire, and came to the alarming conclusion that I am what I loved to tease the most. I spent the rest of the day in utter denial. Asking questions to complete strangers like 'Hey do I look like the type of person that quotes Animal Collective for my facebook status?' did not help. The few competent people(as in people who knew who Animal Collective are)'s answers horrified me. When I came home, I frantically scanned my iTunes collection, trying to find something that could prove this theory wrong. Any Metallica? No, Instead I found Morrissey. Grateful Dead? No, Grizzly Bear. There was nothing to solidify my claim that i was not in fact, Indie. But alas, I decided it was best to come to terms with this revelation, so I put on The Antler's Hospice...and cried.

Haha, this sounds frighteningly familiar. I chuckled when I saw the 'Crown of Love' part - amazing song btw. Antler's Hospice... *sighs* ... relentless album that one. Looking forward to some reviews though!

Oh, and ain't nothing wrong with putting lyrics as your status I'm guilty of that on all accounts, lol.

Nice intro. I think I'm gonna try to follow this and be checking out most of the stuff you review. I pretty much ignore indie for the most part and, well, maybe I shouldn't...judging by how many people on this forum actually enjoy it so much. Also, you seem like as knowledgeable a person as anyone on these boards about the genre, so yeah, bring it on.

At age 83 Chuck Berry still plays he monthy gig to a packed house in Duck Room of the Blueberry Hill Tavern of his hometown of St. Louis. He can still do the duck walk the length of the stage and the age range of the audience is 18 to 80 years old. His next gig at Blueberry Hill is on Jan. 20th at 9 p.m.

DAY 2: DEPRESSION

Style: Review
Album:1990 by Daniel Johnston

I was going for a run with my friend Joey Ramone(I will give all my friends I mention pseudonyms based on their taste in music), and we were talking about the usual, how ****ty a lot of music is. He says to me:
'Hey, you ever listen to Daniel Johnston?'
'No, why?' I replied
''cause it's some ****ed-up music'
Naturally, when I got home I looked him up on last.fm, and thought 'Perfect, he's tagged as indie if this stuff is really weird, there's no way I'm going to like it!' At the thought of proving to myself that I'm am not a dreaded hipster, I downloaded 1990 imediatley. First track comes on, Devil Town. Yeah it sure is catchy, but these lyrics are total nonsense, and he sounds Eugene from Hey Arnold!. Then the next track comes on, Spirit World Rising. More nonsense, and doesn't even have the catchiness factor. Next two songs are the same. I start to become hopeful that I'm not a stupid hipster. Just in time for Some Things Last A Long Time. When it ends mt reaction is simple: 'OH SH*T'. What an amazing song. My head begins to swirl over the next three tracks as I fall in love with his quirkiness. His lyrics are so childish, and ate the same time bone-chillingly disturbing. The last few tracks are extremely dark, and relativley perfect. I start the whole thing over. Devil Town is amazing, and Spirit World Rising's lyrics hit me hard. As I'm listening through now, eager to hear the details this time, I realize this is one fo the saddest albums I own. When the sixth track, Tears Stupid Tears comes up again. i almost break down and cry. I've never heard an album with such basic instrumentation be this tear-jerking. I call Joey Ramone and tell him he's an ******* for not respecting Johnston. He makes fun of me for liking hipster music. By this time the song Funeral Home is playing. Wow, what an incredibley indie song. I love it. I make to the closing track, Softly and tenderly, a very spooky sing-a-long. The subtle baby cries, and choral effect are a perfect way to end this album. My final thought on this immersive album is 'Fine, I guess I do like a few indie songs'. Little did I know this was only the beginning. Over tiem I've only come to appreciate this album more. every time I have a bad day this is what I put on. Not only do I find myself having an understanding with this music, but I also feel that this album does some not very many albums can do, which is understand the listeners emotions as well.
