Default One Very Important Thought: Dayvan Cowboy's Confessions As A BOC Nut

Yes, I'm finally making one. This is just going to be a random journal of rants, reviews, news, and other odd things. I might have a few music related jokes here and there, maybe an analysis of a genre (done in a comedic manner, of course!)

don't expect any order, though. It's just a bunch of random thoughts that are music-related.

Hope you enjoy

Ok just to clarify, what's the name of your journal mean? I'm assuming Boards of Canada from the music I've seen you post about but I'm just curious if it's Blue Oyster Cult or something completely different.

@Phantom: BOC is Boards Of Canada. They're the band that introduced me to Battles, Aphex Twin and pretty much everything else I listen to

@rammetal7:
Thanks
you're so nice...

Top 5 Reasons Why New Prog Is Better Than Old Prog

I originally said this in my top 50 thread, and everybody was all LE GASP! BLASPHEMY! at me and I think I'll elaborate. I'm sure Boobs is going to have a heart attack once he sees this, but whatever. I'm going to talk about Why New Prog Is Better Than Old Prog.

#5:
The New Genres Of Prog
Back in the heyday of prog, there wasn't many prog-spinoff genres. I mean, there was some, but not many. Nowadays, there are tons, including two genre that are brother and sister that I love very much; Post Rock and Math Rock. I hear of post-rock getting hate for it's repetition and droning nature, but I actually love it very much, from Explosions in the Sky to Godspeed You! Black Emperor, to God Is An Astronaut. I think it's a very musically interesting genre. Math Rock, Post-Rock's testosterone filled brother, is a bit more complicated and a bit faster than post rock. It's filled with OMGWTF-worthy time signatures and jerky, twitchy guitar lines. These two genres are awesome, no matter what other people say.

#4:
The Mars Volta
Yes. This pitchfork hated, blob of modern prog. They are one of the most popular modern prog bands, and have two static members (Cedric and Omar) and then there's The Mars Volta Group, which is an ever changing, never static line up of people playing the rest of the instruments. Let me tell you, this is a good band, and DO NOT LISTEN TO WHAT PITCHFORK SAYS ABOUT THEM! Not to mention that Cedric and Omar are quite good looking... *Teenage Fangirl Sigh*

#3:
The Sudden Explosion Of New Prog Bands
Moar Prog = happy Dayvan. It's common sense.

#2:
Avant-Rock (The Demented Version Of Prog)
Now that prog has resurfaced into a cooler, more fulfilling genre, another genre of prog is on the rise: Avant-Rock. It's not afraid to be weird, unpredictable, or inaccessible at all. You've got some great artists such as Battles, Kayo Dot, Tyondai Braxton, and a lot of noise rock. It's a genre on the rise. Experimentalism FTW, and Avant-Rock forever!

#1:
The Advance of Technology Since the Prog Era
There's more technology now than there was back in 1973, so of course with the technological advances, prog's gonna be much be much better. More odd samples, weird guitar effects, instrument exploitation, and the ability to be just plain crazy. You can now have weird loops, fuller sounding recordings, and you can use that weird sample you took of your coffee machine more easily! Hooray, technology!

But I'm not saying all old prog is bad. It certainly has it's good moments, but I like today's prog a bit more.

congratulations, that was well put together and you have some good points, although you did not convince me that New Prog is better...

wait, you were talking bout how New Prog spawned a lot of great sub-genres, without Old Prog there would not be a New Prog, so that must mean...
Old Prog is better!

Kayo Dot are a by product of Maudlin Of The Well ( same frontman) who mixed Black Metal with Jazz amongst other things and this would not have been possible if 70's Prog didn't exist. Merely because the 70's brought the greatest experimentalism of genre fusion than any other genre before or after.

Jazz, Funk, Opera, Folk and Electronica were all used within Prog parameters in the 70's to massively different results but it was still there before modern prog. Just not talked about and due to limited exposure (no digital age etc) means that it has to be unearthed and 'found' as opposed to being readily available on the net.

Gila= Electronica/Folk/Physedelic
Tangerine Dream= Electronica/Ambient/Guitars
to name two bands.

In fact Modern Prog seems much more limited to me and very few bands make it through my listening threshold and only bands that sound 'retro' have 'longevity'.

I really like The Mars Volta par example but their albums have no differentiation and most songs meld into one as they still use a standard guitar/bass/drum combo sound on a lot of their tracks.

Math Rock is a genre I really like ( Faraquet are awesome) but it still uses a standard 'Rock' set up. The whole purpose of prog was to introduce new instruments and make them listenable and indeed, adaptable and very few modern prog bands do that.

Prog=progressive and creating complicated rhythms doesn't mean that you are being progressive at all. Strectching boundaries beyond the usual set up IS Progressive.

Creating unusual time patterns with a basic set up is NOT progressive. I consider Dog Fashion Disco more progressive than say Battles easily.

I knew I'd get crap for this

It's an opinion, people! I prefer newer prog to old prog. To tell you the truth, I'd take an A Silver Mt. Zion album over a King Crimson one any day.

Thank you, for writing the incredibly long rebuttal that I couldn't be arsed to create. Most new prog sounds like an over-produced wankathon. I think it's a bit of a stretch to throw post-rock and math rock into the prog genre, even though both genres certainly are progressive.

I do respect you for your opinion though, Dayvan, but to me, when I think of new prog I think of Porcupine Tree and Spock's Beard and things of that nature, both bands that i can't really dig on.
