Thanks Mr N. No I didn't necessarily mean here, I just meant that in future if someone says I'm a-gonna have a journal with ten videos per entry I'm just going to say nothing. This is certainly not a ****storm but it's still a minor squall, and I just don't have the time or energy for those any more, especially when in the end I don't benefit in the least from my efforts.

And now, it's back to reviewing "Nazis at the center of the Earth"!!

And I'm talking about the fact that some people seem to think that you have to illustrate your article by including videos, in other words, that the writing isn't enough. That's what I mean by drawing pictures. The description should be enough to draw the picture, otherwise why bother? You might as well just put up the video and say here, click this. Certainly it can add to the experience but I've found that some people might just read a few lines and then hit the video, which sort of negates all the effort you've put into the writing.
If you're writing some editorial piece, where your opinion is what matters, then clearly there is no point to a video. But you post mostly reviews. Reviews that are supposed to entice or discourage someone from listening to an album. Providing a video or two to let people hear what the actual music sounds like is a no-brainer.

Anyhoo, I couldn't care less. I'm not saying don't use YTs, I'm just saying I stopped using them for that reason. I feel my writing should be adequate enough to draw a picture without having to actually, you know, draw a picture. If you read a description of music in a book, do you then need to rush to YT to hear what it's like? Often the words can form enough of a description on their own, which is what I try to do.
First of all, a book can't contain a YT video, so it's a moot point as the author doesn't have the option. Secondly, YES I NEED TO HEAR WHAT THE MUSIC SOUNDS LIKE. The entire point of music is listening to it, not reading reviews about it. The reason I pick up a music book, aside from interest in the history side of music, is to find music I want to listen to. If there was an option to let me hear the music I'm reading about through the book, so that I don't have to set it aside and go on the internet or to a CD store and find it, then that would be excellent.

Nah, man, it's not like that. It's just a discussion. Not arguing at all. It was just the first time I had ever heard of something like that. Didn't mean to derail the thread or anything like that. I read all kinds of different threads and even if I don't post anything, I still read it.

The kind of stuff I will be writing about isn't like a Taylor Swift video where you know what it is. It's more than just posting a video, it's doing background research to find the genre to put in the right place, and then there's so little information about the artist(s) themselves...on their own freaking stuff (on their Soundcloud, YouTube, Pandora description, etc.). There is no hard copy in most cases, so I end up doing more research than I want. How about, "I have no freaking clue what it is or how it was made, but here's the video/song." Again, it's not a big deal, just something we're discussing.

A green light to go back to posting videos, Trollheart.

I have a video or two almost every entry. Didn't know that was a bad thing.

If you don't know the story of the artist and/or song you can always talk about your impression of the song or something.

I run in the same problems of having little information on an artist that I want to post in my journal(s). It takes more time and effort to learn more about an unknown band or artist, but you'll be surprised what is out there. I find information in YouTube comments and video details, in reviews etc. I even translated a page from Russian to English using the Bing Translator to get the only information I could on the subject. But you are right, sometimes you end up doing more research than you want.

It's not a bad thing. I made it clear, did I not, that my decision to stop using videos was a personal thing. I don't ask or expect everyone to agree with or follow my example.
