when you put up a list with Queen, Pink Floyd, and all the super greats, it is really hard to choose a single favorite.

I will go with Tull. Aqualung! yea, baby

Well, I went with The Floyd as Echoes has got to be one of the greatest tracks ever. Noticed that Wishbone Ash never got a mention by anyone! I only mention it because Andy Powell is my cousin, whoops, shamefull name drop!

...because they're not progressive. At all.

Sigh

What is this? Real ignorance or just trolling?

And you bothered to feed the troll by quoting it. Nice.

I agree though: Queen really doesn't deserve to be on this poll in the first place, much less voted for when there's over a dozen better groups for those who have listened to enough progressive music to truly distinguish between the various groups and make a choice.

Because people don't like to think of mainstream arena rock as anything else other than soulless droll.

It's hard to tell. Queen certainly had songs which employed a variety of instruments and progressive arrangements, but they had a fondness for conventional rock structure. I haven't heard most of their output, so it's hard for me to make too bold of a generalization, but suffice to say that their unpopular material had a bit of progressive wankery.

See: "Mustapha" from Jazz (1978).

Not going to disagree with that statement, but Queen still isn't "prog" in comparison to, say, Yes or the Mashavishnu Orchestra is. Plenty of groups playing in the 70's were influenced by progressive rock even if they weren't part of that scene (Led Zeppelin, Badfinger, The Alan Parsons Project, etc), yet none of them are on the poll for some reason.

Queen are not prog, I made a horrible mistake adding them to this poll.

They have used progressive elements but this is mostly found in their less popular material, this could be said for a lot of rock artists.
