After finally digging out my parents old LP's and kicking my ass into gear to go buy a record player that works, I got the pleasure of listening to 'Freak Out!' and DAMN was it amazing. Although the sound quality is not up to standard with a regular cd, listening to it on LP was a great experience for me and really a great album.
The return of the son of monster magnet could be possibly go down as one of the weirdest yet most awesome songs, EVER! Zappa is king! |
^is that all you have by him?

I bought Weasels Ripped my Flesh on vinyl the other day, and I just got a record player.
However, there is something wrong with it; it always plays LP's slower than it should. So right now I'm a little pissed off. |
Frank Zappa is probably my favorite musician, he just has so much variety within his discography, that it's hard to really get tired of listening to him.
My current top 3 albums by Zappa: Hot Rats Uncle Meat Over-Nite Sensation Other favorites include Freak Out, Apostrophe, We're only in it for the money, The Grand Wazoo, and 200 Motels. In a month the top 3 will probably be different. Quote:

Odd fact: When Frank Zappa recorded he had all the music written out and expected his session musicians to follow the score and he conducted them like an orchestra. So I am told.

Man, one of my dad's friends snuck me an older pressing of "Weasels Ripped my Flesh" when I was a kid. I wasn't allowed to listen to Zappa till I was a little older, and I have vivid memories of stretching my headphone chords into my closet and listening to that album over and over in secret. "Eric Dolphy Memorial BBQ" definitely tweaked my ten-year-old mind.
Zappa was one of a kind. |

I currently have 12 of zap's babies.
They're all pretty much awesome. Right now my favorite is a tie between the Rats of Hotness and Weasels for the Ripping of Flesh. Of course Burnt Weeny Sandwich and Apostrophe aren't far behind. |
Yeah, I just got all my Zappa a few days ago. I've listened to Hot Rats through a couple times, and that album was pretty kickin', or Zappa In New York (Live album) was hilarious and entertaining...also the music was seemingly effortlessly amazing... I wish I was there. =(
|
I think Zappa was working on this album with something to do with underwater sounds before he died, or something.
Uh, I like Hot Rats, Freak Out!, We're Only In It For the Money, and Burnt Weeny Sandwich. That's about all I know. |
above two posters, have you listened to Apostrophe'?
|
Nah. : (
|
well i'll send a PM your way then
|
I listened to it, it's cool. I'm listening again later tonight, probably.
|
Apostrophe is a fantastic album. That solo on "stink-foot" is one of my favorites.
|
all of zappa's stuff before like '83 is what I consider to be his best period of music. He used to be my favorite musician but I haven't listened to him for close to two years :(.
|
Early, early Zappa will always be best in my book.

Out of all the persons that have existed on this earth, Zappa would have been one Id like to spend the afternoon with.
It's sad. People see the hair, the scowl and hear the music...and immediately think "drugs" But Frank was clean (cept for ciggies) I get frustrated cause I cant write music like his, LOL, but he remains a large influence on my musical choices and my thinking. Now I dont like everything he's done. The Sheik Yerbouti/You are What you is period was really rank. Thingfish was highly racist and idiotic....and the Mothers period with Flo and Eddie...ahh......But thru Zappa, I learned about Stravinsky, Hindemith, Elliot Carter, Stockhausen, Oliver Messiaen and others.....Not bad for a black kid from urban Philadelphia, huh? Listening to "Sinister Footwear" is just one of my favorite Zappa moments. I mean there are so many compositions I could name...but this one and "Zoot Allures" almost brings me to tears...the emotions, the many colors...its just a sadness that this man no longer is with us. Kill Ugly Radio. |

Dweezil is not bad either - in fact his guitar style is highly reminiscent of Frank's. His solo stuff is kind of garbage, but the Zappa Plays Zappa shows are fantastic. His version of "Inca Roads" blew my mind.
|
His cover of "My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama" was awful. :\
But yeah, he is top notch in Zappa plays Zappa. |
I had a chance to go see Zappa Plays Zappa last year and I didn't go... I really regret not going now.
I think Frank Zappa is pretty much the only evidence you need to bring to an argument when someone claims that the best musicians are those on drugs. Well, throw Minor Threat/Fugazi in there as well and you're really set. |

I do love me some 'We're Only In It For The Money'. That's how ya do satire, gentlemen.
|
who else thinks Frank Zappa has the best song titles ever?
|
tbh i'd have to give that to the band Anal Cunt, but he's definetaly close behind. ;)

Help!

Zappa is bliss :)

Zappa is such a strange figure. For the longest of time I was only introduced to such a shortage of material like "Valley Girl" and "Dancin' Fool" or basically his most piss-takey type stuff.
Years later after seeing a few interviews by the man, and delving deeper into his material(especially early Mothers) I've gained a new found appreciation for the man. It's a major shame that only the toilet humor side of Zappa is really known. I mean, it's a very important side, but I think the intellect of him, and his music, is by far one of the most underappreciated aspects of Zappa. Albeit, I doubt he'd be pretentious enough to mind. Honestly, I think as acclaimed as he is, Zappa is still by far one of the most under-appreciated figures in all of music. The way he'd fearlessly hold his own opinions, and had such a respect for a wide variety of music while even more fearlessly showcased an irreverent spirit to mainstream trends. He opened doors to forms of musical experimentation in mainstream rock music that were just not possible before. Honestly, music would been a way darker blander place without him. |

Who doesn't like Zappa's cover of "Stairway To Heaven"?
|
How exactly would one go about introducing themselves to Zappa? Bearing in mind I've got absolutely no idea about him or his music.

If you like good instrumental rock with jazz undertones or blues overtones (what does that even MEAN?), check out Hot Rats. For something more sprawling and persona-defining, try Joe's Garage. Other highly-regarded albums of his: Absolutely Free, Apostrophe ('), Freak Out!, The Grand Wazoo, One Size Fits All... There are many more routes, but those ones are general enough for you to diverge off of them further. |
