We're Only In It for the Money is the most underrated album of all time. Front to back brilliance, lyrically and musiically. Light years ahead of stuff coming out 10 years from now.

Kevorkian Logic 08-05-2008 03:13 PM

I don't think it is underrated at all tbh. I agree it does have it's good moments and I do enjoy this album, but I think there are better Zappa albums out there and gets as much praise as it deserves.

cardboard adolescent 08-05-2008 03:57 PM

Absolutely Free is my personal favorite. Who else could make an instantly classic concept album about vegetables?

Brad Stengel 08-10-2008 07:18 PM

I'd say early Zappa is underrated in general, I suppose, its just WOIFTM is my absolute favorite.

Although "Brown Shoes Don't Make It" on Absolutely Free might be my favorite song.

Mud Shark!

Bump for Zappa

Not much beats his work and genre experiments.

I first heard Hot Rats and it blew me away. Still to this day my favourite Zappa album (Especially Green Gene) Was never a HUGE Mothers fan, but I still liked it.

However, my favourite period would have his later stuff, classical works and the work with the symphony.

Molecules 10-05-2008 06:51 AM

pretty sure i've said it already but pour moi 60's Zappa>>>>the rest.
didn't he get pushed into the orchestra pit at the royal Albert Hall and eff up his vocal chords? not quite sure how your voice drops an octave from that kind of accident but apparently..

jackhammer 10-06-2008 01:00 PM

TBH there is no era of Zappa that I dislike but Hot Rats is so awesome. Tinseltown Rebellion is great though. His classical stuff is great too.

RoemerMW 10-06-2008 10:02 PM

I was forced to delete all but three of my many Zappa albums yesterday. I was clearing all of my low bit-rate albums from my collection, and most of my Zappa albums were 192kbps or less :( I am now going to re-obtain his complete discography in 320kbps glory! And I just heard Hot Rats for the first time yesterday. I'm infatuated with Zappa at the moment.

A5T0N3D1 10-08-2008 04:46 PM

i just started listening to zappa, recently.

so far i got uncle meat and burnt weeny sandwich.

it blew up my badassometer

blackspots 10-10-2008 08:42 AM

burnt weeny sandwhich, hot rats and Waka/Jawaka are my faves.

sweetleaf 10-10-2008 10:56 AM

oh Frank Zappa, I admit that I downloaded his discography and after I deleted all of the orchestra stuff it still takes up 1.70 gigs on my ipod...
I like "Nanook Rubs It" & "Camarillo Brillo" the best out of all the albums.
has anyone heard him talking to congress about pornagraphy??

Bulldog 10-10-2008 12:32 PM

The man deserves the title of 'God' if only for Bobby Brown alone

Or, indeed, this;

YouTube - Frank Zappa - The Dangerous Kitchen

A5T0N3D1 10-12-2008 12:33 AM

first song i heard from him was bobby brown.

then...why does it hurt when i pee

U DELETED HIS ORCHESTRA STUFF????????

Son_of_Mr_Greengenes 10-30-2008 11:53 PM

I think deleting Zappa's orchestral pieces is crazy. They are excessively good.

Gross Horse 10-30-2008 11:54 PM

yes this is true. better than say, john zorn and john cage put together?

Better than both I'd say. Better than both put together? I wouldn't say so.

Comus 10-31-2008 07:04 AM

Zappa is the only man to have transcended decades and the mortal coil to release a lifes work that is beyond any measure.

I admit limited listening to Cage and Zappa but do know a fair bit of Zorns work.
I just am unable to consider that I could even compare them. They are all just so different.

Try to answer his questions as best as possible. He's a little bit slow, so take that into account when discussing things with him. To him, Cage, Zorn and Zappa are all the same.

Your last few posts have been comments about Gross Horse. You may think he sucks (because he does) but a noob stalking a noob is worse in my book.

Don't resort to making random stuff up. Seriously, just admit you're an idiot.

I don't know if anyone's brought this up, but does anyone else have "The Real Frank Zappa Book"? It's by him with this Peter guy. It's really good.

Gross Horse 10-31-2008 07:03 PM

toeandno, is that you in your avatar? if you so you're pretty cute! at least a 7/10

Roygbiv 10-31-2008 08:51 PM

If I wanted to get into Zappa, where should I begin? What is the album that will make me say, "I get it"?

There are many albums you could start with. If you like sort of jazz-rock-orchestral get Hot Rats. If you like Rock get Apostrophe(') or "You are What You is" or "Over-nite Sensation". If you want to start with avant garde Zappa, get Freak Out! As a starter. Or just purely orchestral get "The Yellow Shark"

Barabajagal 10-31-2008 09:21 PM

I like Frank Zappa humor, but I like Frank Zappa music even more. I would start with "Hot Rats" to get an idea of how brilliant his songwriting/playing are, and then explore the more humorous albums after. The humor is great, but I think as an introduction you should just be blown away by the musicality.

Roygbiv 10-31-2008 09:27 PM

Thanks for the recommendations. 2 for Hot Rats so far.

I just bought The Real Frank Zappa Book the other day, and it hasn't disappointed.

I'm a relatively new Zappa fan and my collection of his stuff is small, but I love everything I've heard from the man, especially his jazz-fusion stuff. Any reccomendations on which album I should acquire next?

I already have Apostrophe, Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch, Joe's Garage, Sheik Yerbouti, and The Grand Wazoo.

Hot Rats is essential. I'm rather partial to 'Tinsel Town Rebellion' too.

Over-Nite Sensation, One Size Fits All, You Are What You is, Hot Rats, Freak Out!, We're Only in it for the Money, Roxy and Elsewhere, Waka/Jawaka. Just to name a few.
