Wish you were here. i love it so much.

Insane Guest 12-20-2011 11:28 AM

Have you heard the version with Stephane Grappeli? Sounds a lot more raw but still just as amazing.

Jarvig 07-03-2012 02:24 AM

Because of solos: Comfortably Numb
Because of being perfect: Shine on You Crazy Diamond
Because of being true Pink Floyd: Dogs
Because of being pshycedelic heaven: Echoes

sopsych 07-07-2012 10:09 AM

I don't much like Pink Floyd musically before The Wall, which makes it easier....

"Another Brick in the Wall," "Run," and "Hey You" - hard to decide which is best

Best post-Waters song - probably "One Slip"

There probably should be a thread about the best song after Waters left.

MissRocky 07-07-2012 11:38 AM

My favorite has to be "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" parts 1 & 2

25 mins of multiple eargasms!!

myles 07-07-2012 03:44 PM

I must say I do have a soft spot for The Gunners Dream.

Are you developing a new binary language that consists out of question marks and exclamation marks instead of 0's and 1's?

Jarvig 07-08-2012 04:55 AM

I think you know what the answer is to you question. ;)

sopsych 07-08-2012 09:51 AM

The songs before The Wall are too long and/or dreary, too prog, or (early stuff) too weird.

Too dreary before The Wall?

Rjinn 07-08-2012 10:36 AM

Shine On You Crazy Diamond.

I mean musically. "Welcome to the Machine" is an example. I realize that Waters wrote mostly dreary lyrics for the band (and in fact so did Gilmour after Waters left), but at least The Wall sounded energetic.

Even musically I don't see what you're talking about. I love The Wall and The Final Cut but they are some seriously downer albums, both lyrically and musically, compared to most of what came before. I can only really think of two or three songs on The Wall that are particularly energetic, and only one on The Final Cut, and all of them are pretty angry. I certainly can't picture a song as upbeat as this ever appearing on either of those albums:

sopsych 07-09-2012 01:58 PM

Pink Floyd with Barrett doesn't count as "dreary." The Final Cut is dreary, yes. It's my least favorite of the later albums (and probably near the bottom for anyone not named Roger Waters). I haven't listened to all of The Wall, but the better-known songs seem energetic enough to me.

Okay, well "Paintbox" isn't long, proggy, or weird either so it still stands as a counter-example to your description of pre-Wall Pink Floyd.

Anyway, how about this post-Barrett, pre-Wall, short, non-proggy, non-weird track:

You should listen to it then. At the very least it would give you some kind of a leg to stand on in this sort of conversation. :)

"Free Four" sounds pretty good. Very modern-sounding guitar work for such an old track.

It seems impossible to single anything out from one of the best discographies ever. I'll go with Wish You Were Here. I find it hard to not feel emotional every time I hear it.

Agree, especially with Dark Side of the Moon. That album works as a whole masterpiece. I don't see how you can possibly take it apart.

Forward To Death 07-10-2012 06:45 AM

Its not just DSOTM, every album post-Barrett is essentially one big song. It's all cohesive. They were artists, but Waters had all the writing talent, that was obvious when he left.

Rjinn 07-10-2012 07:05 AM

Yea I agree with that too. Was just referring Dark Side as a prime example. If you even try to pick apart any of Floyd's work, DSotM would be the last place to look.

Howard the Duck 07-10-2012 09:56 AM

still Pow R Toc H

or Several Species of Small Furry Animals Grooving in a Pict

Dark Side? zzzzzzzzzzzzzz (except for "Money" and "Brain Damage/Eclipse")

Plankton 07-10-2012 10:16 AM

Hard to pick just one, as has been stated, but I've always had a sweet spot for One Of These Days. Love the lap steel on it, and for dark trippy vibes with a sequencer, this is genious.

We talked about this before in here! Absolutely love this song.

Another one from the early era that I love:

The main motif sounds like it's from a 60's spy movie/ T.V series!

ElephantSack 07-10-2012 07:16 PM

Hard to pick a favorite with a band like the Floyd.
"Let There Be More Light", "Remember a Day", "Echoes", "Pigs (Three Different Ones)", "Dogs", "Us and Them" and "In the Flesh?" are the ones that come off the top of the head.

Mooneh 08-06-2012 09:42 PM

Take Up Thy Stethoscope And Walk

Bike

Grantchester Meadows

Atom Heart Mother

Have A Cigar

Just to name a few.

Frownland 11-10-2013 10:20 AM

While Meddle is not my favourite album if theirs, Echoes is hands down Floyd's best song.

Taxman 11-18-2013 06:59 AM

See Emily Play. It's perfect hippy song but it still has great and catchy melody. Syd voice sounds great too.

Key 11-18-2013 07:48 AM

Just one? But there are so many that I consider to be the best. I guess I'd go with...

Sorry its not the album version, Youtube sucks.

mikpop93 12-09-2013 11:51 AM

So many good ones. The one that I keep coming back to over and over again is definitely Comfortably Numb.

Remember A Day is my favorite. Great melody and texture.

Meddle is kinda PF's Tarkus IMO. Should've been a one side album. 'Cept the weak sine of Meddle is better than the weak side of Tarkus.

Which side is the weak side of Meddle?
