To be totally honest, a lot of us grew up with Green Day, and if you think of all of the bands/artists that you listened to threw adolescence, Green Day are probably one of the better bands.
They're older, less poppy stuff, still sounds good after this time.
I think the problem with Green Day, is that they appealed to us as alienated teens/young adults themselves, and as time passed, they lost that charm.
Ditto, Blink 182.

well, I guess this is growing up.

Or maybe they kept the charm and you lost it... the music is your Puff the Magic Dragon.

I'll admit to listening to green day as a youth, but never Blink 182. Even then I knew the difference between the two, which is most distinguishing with the overall "punk aura" of the bands. I'm aware of the pop-punk sub genre, but how much pop does a band need to use before they are just a pop band with some punk elements?

all of them suck.

Biggest thing I hate about Green Day is I can't look for Good Riddance the band on youtube or their song 21 Guns with out having Green Day's **** songs pop up.

I wasn't comparing Blink and Greenday, I'm was just pointing out that they succumbed to the same fate.
I'm sure Greenday & Blink 182 will still appeal to some, but they had to move away from their original sound in order to remain relevant I believe.

Songs like Time Of Your Life won't have had the same effect if they were being sung by a group of 40 somethings.

I'm not a Blink 182 fan btw, they're cover of Another Girl, Another Planet lead me to dislike them with a passion.

However, I will admit to listen to them whilst growing up, as I did Greenday.

I have to admit that despite not being a great fan of Green Day I really rate American Idiot. Some will disagree but moving Green Day into a more mainstream rock sound was a smart move commercially. But more importantly American Idiot showed some artistic intent which manifested itself by making AI a concept album. It wasn't exceptionally original (they were effectively making a poorer version of The Who's concept albums without Townshend's writing ability) but it showed that these guys had some ambition. And in the end they made a pretty damn good hard rock album with some pop stylings to keep it selling. In my purely subjective opinion I feel that this was better than any pop-punk album they made throughout the nineties (With apologies to Dookie)

That's my brief two cents on the matter.

I used to love Green Day. I still do listen to them on a weekly basis, I just don't like what they've done in the last 8 or so years. I hated 21st Century Breakdown and while I don't love American Idiot I don't think it deserves all the hate it seems to get.
