Well, and there are physically only so many possible melodies for a song... at some point in time, every new artist will just be "copying" an older one.

eh, not really. I mean you're really limiting yourself to either genre or instrumentation at that point.

If they had played that melody on something other than a guitar I'd bet they'd have gotten away with it. If I ever have the mojo to pull off a band, I wouldn't have a guitar in it (excluding bass).

Went to see Green Day live last year for the first time. A two and a half hour spectacle and one I will not forget in a hurry. Personally, not a huge fan of their old stuff very inconsistent but I know I will get a lot of criticism from people who claim they have "sold out" now. They put on one hell of a show!

I took a trip down nostalgia road and listened to a few of their songs yesterday, coincidentally this thread gets bumped.

I was obsessed, and it eroded, etc. I do think some of their stuff is still great, but for the most part I've come to find them rehashing themselves (especially in the very early stuff... Even though my favorite album comes from that period).
